Anodes should be inspected and possibly replaced every year as part of routine maintenance.  This is particularly 
important if the fresh water in the water heater was produced by an onboard R.O. fresh water maker.  For non-
water maker applications, every other year may be fine depending on circumstances.   However, if you have 
never changed the anodes and it has been more than a few years since installation, it is recommended to leave 
them  in  place  as  the  head  of  the  anode  may  have  "welded"  itself  in  place  and  attempted  removal  risks 
catastrophic damage.
