Cleaning the Foam Air Cleaner Element
1. Wash the foam element in liquid soap and warm
water. When the element is clean, rinse it thoroughly.
2. Dry the element by squeezing it in a clean cloth.
Important:
Replace the foam element if it is
torn or worn.
Servicing the Paper Air Cleaner
Element
Do not clean the paper filter. Replace it after 200
operating hours (Figure 32). Inspect the element for
tears, an oily film, or damage to the rubber seal, and
replace it if it is damaged.
Installing the Foam and Paper Elements
Important:
To prevent engine damage, always
operate the engine with the complete foam and
paper air cleaner assembly installed.
1. Carefully slide the foam element onto the paper air
cleaner element (Figure 32).
2. Place the air cleaner assembly onto the air cleaner
base and secure it with the 2 wing nuts (Figure 32).
3. Place the air cleaner cover into position and tighten
the cover knob (Figure 32).
Servicing the Air Cleaner
(Model 22974)
Service Interval:
Every 250 hours
Servicing the Air Cleaner Cover and
Body
1. Stop the engine and remove the key.
2. Check the air cleaner body for damage which could
cause an air leak. Check the whole intake system
for leaks, damage, or loose hose clamps. Replace or
repair and damaged components.
3. Release the latches on the air cleaner and pull the air
cleaner cover off of the air cleaner body (Figure 33).
Important:
Do not remove the air filters yet.

4. Squeeze the dust cap sides to open it and knock the
dust out.
5. Clean the inside of the air cleaner cover with
compressed air.
Replacing the Filters
1. Gently slide the primary filter out of the air cleaner
body (Figure 33). Avoid knocking the filter into the
side of the body.
