Activating the Battery
No Parts Required
Procedure
None
Note:
This procedure is only needed for Model No.
07277TC.
If the battery is not filled with electrolyte or activated, it
must be removed from the vehicle, filled with electrolyte,
and charged. Bulk electrolyte with 1.260 specific gravity
must be purchased from a local battery supply outlet.
1. Remove the battery hold-down and lift the battery
out of the battery base.
Battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid which
is a deadly poison and causes severe burns.
•
Do not drink electrolyte or allow it to contact
your skin, eyes or clothing. Wear safety
glasses to shield your eyes and rubber gloves
to protect your hands.
•
Fill the battery where clean water is always
available for flushing the skin.
2. Remove the filler caps from the battery and slowly
fill each cell until electrolyte is just above the plates.
3. Replace the filler caps and connect a 3 to 4 amp.
battery charger to the battery posts. Charge the
battery at a rate of 3 to 4 amperes for 4 to 8 hours
(12 volts). Do not overcharge the battery.
Charging the battery produces gasses that can
explode.
Never smoke near the battery and keep sparks
and flames away from battery.
4. When the battery is charged, disconnect the charger
from the electrical outlet and battery posts.
5. Remove the filler caps. Slowly add electrolyte to
each cell until electrolyte is up to the fill line. Install
the filler caps.
Important:
Do not overfill the battery.
Electrolyte will overflow onto other parts of the
vehicle and severe corrosion and deterioration
will result.
6. Install the battery; refer to Installing the Battery,
Electrical System Maintenance , page 31.
