1.7.3 Connecting laser- and monitor diode
Laser diodes are produced in many different housings. Normally the following
components are installed together in the chassis of the laser:

Laser diode
•
Monitor diode
•
TEC element for setting the chip temperature
•
Temperature sensor
The laser diode is always sourced against ground by the current controller. This is of
considerable advantage regarding the safety of the laser diode and the stability of the
laser diode current.
The monitor diode input is set up as trans-impedance amplifier with virtual ground
(input impedance 0
Ω
).
The polarity of the photo diode may be selected free. It can also be floating.
The monitor diode input can be used with or without bias voltage (5 V or 0 V).
Therefore wire bridges have to be connected depending on the individual
configuration shown in the next section.
