NOTES
Do not remove the stator from the drive end frame (25).
16. Check the bearings for smooth rotation. Replace if
required.
Assembly Notes
• Assemble the alternator by reversing the order of
removal.
• Torque the alternator pulley nut (1) to 50 ft-lb (6 8 Nm).
Alternator Stator Coil Inspection

1. Measure the resistance across each stator lead with
two wires (1) and the stator lead with 6 wires (2).
Is the resistance approximately 1 ohm?
YES Continue with Step 2.
NO Stator is bad. Replace stator and drive frame
end.
2. Check for continuity between each lead of the stator
coil (1 and 2) and the stator core (3).
Is continuity indicated?
YES Stator is bad. Replace stator and drive frame
end.
NO Stator is good.
Alternator Rotor Inspection

1. Measure the resistance across top slip ring (1) and
bottom slip ring (2).
Is the resistance approximately 2.9 ohms?
YES Continue with Step 2
NO Rotor is bad. Replace the rotor.
2. Check for continuity between the slip rings (1 and 2)
and the rotor core (3).
Is continuity indicated?
YES Rotor is bad. Replace the rotor.
NO Continue with Step 3.
3. Check to see if the slip rings (1 and 2) are scored. If
the slip rings are scored, use emery cloth to smooth
the slip rings.
4. Measure the diameter of the slip rings (1 and 2).
Is the slip ring diameter less than 0.551 in. (14
mm)?
YES Slip rings have too much wear. Replace the
rotor.
NO The rotor is good.
