Transmission line theory indicates that maximum power transfer efficiency is obtained when
transmission lines are terminated with their characteristic impedance. However, this is not practical
since the characteristic impedance varies with frequency. Use of 100
Ω
for terminating wire lines
operating in this frequency range has become standard practice in the industry.
Measurements must always be made using a transformer-coupled source and load. When
individual sections of the wireline simulator are connected in tandem, the attenuation characteristics
are cumulative. That is, the losses in dB at each frequency are directly additive (within the tolerances
of each line module).
