Replacing a System Fan
If the IPMI is not utilized to determine which fan has failed, open the top cover of the chassis
while the system is running to locate the position of the failed fan. Never run the server for
an extended period of time with the top cover open.
Then remove power from the system as described in Section 3.1 and remove the cover as
described in Section 3.2.
1. Remove the failed fan's power cable from the backplane.
2. Remove the four pins securing the fan to the fan housing.
3. Lift the failed fan from the fan housing and out of the chassis.
4. Place the new fan into the vacant space in the fan housing, making sure the arrows
on the top of the fan (indicating air direction) point in the same direction as the arrows
on the other fan in the same fan housing.
5. Reconnect the fan wires to the same fan headers as the previous fan.
6. Power up the system and check that the fan is working properly before replacing the
chassis cover.
