If the access key is not detected
within the operating range of the anten-
nas inside the vehicle, the push-button
ignition switch and the engine start
cannot be operated.

Even when the access key is outside
the vehicle, if it is placed too close to
the glass, the engine may start.
y
Do not leave the access key in the
following places. It may become im-
possible to operate the push-button ig-
nition switch and the engine start. It
may also cause a false warning to be
issued although no malfunction has
actually occurred, or in warnings not
being issued although a malfunction
has occurred.
– On the instrument panel
– On the floor
– Inside the glove box
– Inside the door trim pocket
– On the rear seat
– On the rear shelf (4-door models)
– Inside the boot (4-door models)
– In the cargo area (5-door models)

When operating the push-button ig-
nition switch or starting the engine, if
the battery of the access key is dis-
charged, perform the procedure de-
scribed in the “When access key does
not operate properly” section in this
manual. In such a case, replace the bat-
tery immediately. Refer to the “Replac-
ing battery of access key” section in
chapter 11 of the Owner’s Manual.

There are some general precau-
tions when starting the engine.
Carefully read the precautions de-
scribed in the “General precau-
tions when starting engine”
section in this manual.

If the indicator on the push-button
ignition switch flashes in green af-
ter the engine has started, never
drive the vehicle. The steering
wheel is still locked, and it may re-
sult in an accident. To release the
steering lock, press the push-but-
ton ignition switch again while
moving the steering wheel right
and left and depressing the brake
pedal.

When the operation indicator on
the push-button ignition switch is
flashing in orange, there may be a
malfunction with the vehicle. Con-
tact a SUBARU dealer immediate-
ly.
y
If the indicator on the push-button
ignition switch is flashing in green
after the engine has started, it
means that the steering is still
locked. Depress the brake pedal
while moving the steering wheel
to the right and left, and press the
push-button ignition switch.
