Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE IS OUR HERITAGE. IT IS OUR PASSION.
And it is an integral part of the Subaru
experience. Which is why every vehicle we build is equipped with an
advanced
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Symmetrical, in that it features drivetrain components
positioned along a longitudinal axis for optimum
balance
and
control
. In turn, power is constantly delivered to all four wheels
and is automatically distributed where traction is needed most.

Our 5-speed manual transmission
has been reengineered for improved
shift feel, and is provided as standard
equipment on all Outback 2.5i and
2.5 XT models.
Standard on Outback 3.0R models
and optional on 2.5 XT models, our
new and remarkably smooth-shifting
5-speed automatic transmission with
SPORTSHIFT manual control features
an adaptive capability that chooses
the optimum gear based on driving
situations.
Most Outback models and All-
Wheel Drive system configurations
use either a viscous-type or planetary-
type center differential, managing
torque distribution based on where
traction is needed most.

What’s more, because every vehicle and driving style has its own specific All-Wheel Drive
requirements, Subaru engineers have developed four unique systems, each with their
own advantages and capabilities. Integrated with the Subaru Boxer engine and
complemented by our 4-wheel fully independent suspension,
Symmetrical
All-Wheel
Drive
delivers
the
exceptional
performance, agility and handling that makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Subaru becomes the only manufacturer in the world
to feature standard All-Wheel Drive in its entire vehicle line.
Outback Models
AWD System
How It Works
2.5i and 2.5 XT
Continuous
Utilizing a viscous-center locking differential, under normal conditions
models with
power is split 50/50 between the front and rear wheels. If wheel slip-
5-speed
page occurs, the center differential helps transfer power to the wheels
manual
with the most traction.
2.5i and
Active
Featuring an electronically managed continuously variable multi-
2.5i Limited with
plate transfer clutch, this AWD system monitors parameters such as
4-speed automatic
wheel slippage and vehicle speed, transferring power to the front or
rear wheels with the best traction.
2.5 XT and 3.0R
VTD
Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) uses an electronically controlled
models with
hydraulic transfer clutch in conjunction with a planetary gear-type
5-speed automatic
center differential to control power distribution between the front and
rear wheels. Under normal driving conditions, the VTD system splits
power 45% front and 55% rear, to deliver more of a performance
driving feel.
3.0R VDC Limited
VDC
The most advanced AWD system Subaru has ever offered in the U.S.,
with 5-speed
it combines VTD technology with a stability system called Vehicle
automatic
Dynamics Control (VDC). Individual sensors placed throughout the
vehicle continuously monitor lateral g-forces, yaw, brake pressure,
steering angle and wheel speed to detect an unintended deviation in
the vehicle’s path and help correct it, often before you feel a thing.
