WARNING! Never discharge the Powder Lance against yourself or
anyone else. High concentration of powder can damage airways and
eyes.
The Powder Lance is connected to a pressurized powder extinguisher.
It normally has15 bars of pressure and uses a composition of salts as
extinguishing agent. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions and
safety data sheet for information regardning the fire extinguisher.
Powder is dehydrating against skin. In case of skin contact wash with
warm water and soap. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty
of water. Powder absorbed by the body can cause symptoms of
dehydration with increased heart rate, dizziness and thirst. Drink
water. Inhalation of powders irritates the airways. It is not long-lasting
but can cause acute impaired respiration at high concentrations. In
case of difficulty breathing, always consult a doctor. In case of
emergancy call the emergancy call centre (within EU call 112).
In order to drill a hole for the Powder Lance, a drilling machine is nee-
ded. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions and safety data sheet for
information on your particular drilling machine. When drilling keep in
mind that dust with chemicals and particles can be harmful to inhale.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Wear safety goggles, helmet, protective gloves and fire protective
clothing.
COMMON PROBLEMS
Powder jam and pressure drop can occur on old extinguishers as a
result od poor maintenance. Check your extinguishers pressure and
shake it up side down at regular basis.
Snow and dirt can be pushed into the nozzle. To avoid this, protect
the nozzle with the supplied silicone sleeve. Leave the sleeve on until
just before the attack.
The silicone sleeve could be difficult to remove from the nozzle. Check
that the sleeve goes of easly before restoring in the vehicle. If ne-
cessary flour more talc into the sleeve. Be sure that the top of the sle-
eve is left outside the nozzle to secure a better grip when removing.
Failing to reconnect the quick coupling. If powder is still in the hose
when switching extinguishers there is a risk that powder ends up
pressed between the nipple and the coupler during the reconnection.
Always empty the extinguisher entirely before switching to a new
one. Always clean the couplers from powder after each use.
The lance pipe can be bent if it is forced sideways in the drill hole.
Work only in the direction of the pipe or through rotation around its
own axis. (The pipe is 2 mm thick which can stand normal use).
MAINTENANCE
After each use: Clean the equipment using compressed air through
the hose and the lance to remove excess powder. Do this outdoors or
in the car wash facility. Use a small brush to remove any pressed pow-
der from inside the hose couplings and nozzle. Now and then: Re-
move the nozzle from the lance and put it in a bucket with hot water
and detergent together with all the quick couplings, including the
hose couplings (not the hose itself). Wash them, wipe them clean and
let them dry entirely before reassemblying and restoring in the vehicle.
If there is a chance that a victim is located in the fire compartment the
use of powder most be made upon the operators own judgement. If
the fire is small and powder is likly to be the first that reaches the
victim it can irritate the airways and the victim shouldn’t stay in high
concentrations for any longer period of time (minutes). If the fire com-
partment is filled with smoke this is more likely to kill the victim, and
using powder to extinguish the fire cousing could be the best option
available. Ventilation might be appropriate sooner in this event to
avoid smoke reaching the victim, and the rescue should follow as
soon as possible. These kind of decisions and tactics should be hand-
led by or advised by the fire service. Powder will not be considered a
problem if the victim is located in any other room than the room
where the powder is released.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
When the Powder Lance is used in its correct context and according
to the instructions, the risk of damage to health or environment is
small. For information regarding the dry chem powder you use refer
to the manufacturer's instructions and safety data sheet. Most dry
chem powders are not classified as hazardous for health or the envi-
ronment. The risks that one are exposed to are mainly related to the
environment to which one is subjected in an fire scene. No fire scene
is the same, and it is difficult to anticipate and prepare for the risks to
wich one will be exposed. The individual's own risk assessment and
judgement is therefore crucial. Smartish AB can not be responsible
for any personal or property damages occurring in on the fire scene.
However, we are keen to work to minimise the risks of injuries by
making the user aware of some particular risks. Please read these
safety precautions carefully and save them for later use.
WARNING! Staying close to a fire can cause burns. Wear fire pro-
tective clothing or keep a competent distance. Take cover behind a
wall to avoid direct heat radiation. Note that the recommended use
of the Powder Lance is from a safe place outside the fire compart-
ment in protection behind a wall and with no direct exposion to fire
smoke.
WARNING! The equipment can be hot after contact with fire and fire
smoke. Avoid touching the lance immediately after use. Wear pro-
tective gloves.
WARNING! If there i a fire directly above the planned point of attack
there is a risk of collapse with parts falling down. Try to find a safer
point of attack. Always look for signs of collapse. Wear a helmet.
WARNING! The bearing capacity of building constructions is affec-
ted by fire. Steel constructions are more drastically affected when it
reaches higher temperatures. Modern lightweight constructions are
also affected faster than solid constructions. Early in the firedevelop-
ment the risks are small, but grows bigger as the fire continues to
spread.
WARNING! The recommendation is to drill the hole for attack
through a window frame. Glass that gets heated up by fire can crack
with the risk of glass-splinters during the attack. Avoid drilling in the
glass that attaches a bit into the frame. Wear safety goggles.
If the window breaks flames and smoke can suddenly stream out of
the window. Hot fire smoke from enclosed spaces can ignite when
oxygen is increasing. To prevent this from happening
—
fill the smoke
inside the room with powder. Croush down below the window
when smoke and flames stream out. Take a distance. If you run the
risk of inhaling fire smoke or burning flames,
WARNING! Never enter a room that is filled with smoke without a
respirator! Fire smoke are very toxic.
WARNING! Never insert the lance into any electrical equipment,
electrical cabinets or other spaces where the lance may come into
contact with any current. A pre-drilled hole where the lance can be
applied without risk can be prepared by the owner. When drilling
through a wall, avoid drilling where sockets, switshes, lighting or
electrical wires usually are located. The powder itself is not con-
ductive and can be used for fires in electrical equipment.
INTENDED USE
Find a place in the vehicle where the equipment becomes readily
available. Do not place it in the cab as it may pose a hazard in the
event of a collision. The Powder Lance is best utilized by the first
person to arrive whether you are in a fire engine or a smaller first
respond vehicle. One or two powder bottles and one drilling
machine can be carried together with the Powder Lance to the
point of attack. It can be done with everything fastened to a powder
extinguisher or with the Powder Lance carried separately and con-
nected to the powder extinguisher first at the point of attack. A extin-
guisher can be carried in the handle or on your shoulder. There are
equipment that facilitates carrying on the market.
Hold the powder lance over the rubber handle and feel free to
place your thumb over the arrow marker on the hand guard. It
provides a steady grip with the distribution facing upwards. The
arrow marker is submerged so that you can feel it through a fire
glove. You can control the distribution by turning the lance, a tactical
advantage when the fire origin is located at one side of the room.
When the Powder Lance is placed in the pre-drilled hole, remove
the safety pin and release the extinguishing agent by pressing the
hand lever down. Note that if the Powder Lance is held freely in the
air, a recoil will be downwards because the distribution is oriented
upwards.
One should strive to contain the fire early without exposing your self
to toxic fire fumes. Close all doors and windows! It privides a better
condition for a good extinguishing effect and makes it difficult for
the fire to spread. Avoid making large openings that will add oxygen
to the fire compartment. Only with enough extinguishing agent or
water to control of the fire is in place a coordinated operation with
ventilation may be performed safely.
Powder extinguishes flames effectively and therefore lowers the
temperature considerably. It delays the fire development and creates
a safer environment for the smoke divers and people who may
remain in the building have a better chance of surviving. The Pow-
der Lance's high flow increases the ability to knock down major fires.
If you have more extinguishers ready you can continue the operat-
ion and keep the fire under control for a longer period of time. Pow-
ders are not cooling hot surfaces as good as it cools smoke and
flames and therefore you should continue the operation with water
on hot surfaces and glow fires.
