A.1.1
What does ESD mean?
Definition
All electronic modules are equipped with highly integrated modules or components. Based
on their design, these electronic components are highly sensitive to overvoltage and thus to
discharge of static electricity.
These Electrostatic Sensitive Devices/Modules are commonly abbreviated ESD. The
common international designation ESD stands for Electrostatic Sensitive Device.
Electrostatic sensitive modules are identified by the following symbol:
CAUTION
Electrostatic sensitive devices may be destroyed by voltages that are undetectable to a
human. Voltages of this kind occur as soon as a component or an assembly is touched by a
person who is not grounded against static electricity. The damage to a module as a result
of overvoltage cannot usually be detected immediately. It may only become apparent after
a long period of operation.
