Introduction
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W is a utility-grade serial device server that combines an IEEE 802.11b/g Local Area
Network (LAN) with wired serial ports. It allows network designers to connect any RS232/422/485 serial device at
up to 230 kbps for wireless access and control via an IEEE 802.11i WLAN. The RUGGEDCOM RS920W eliminates
costly wiring and simplifies network installation.
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W can also act as a wireless access point and can – in combination with an Ethernet over
VDSL (EoVDSL) interface – aggregate many devices at a remote location back to the central control room using
existing telephone grade cable (or other legacy serial cabling) at distances of up to 5 km (3 mi) at up to 35 Mbps
(upstream and downstream).
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W functions as a wireless client/bridge within an IEEE 802.11b/g compliant WLAN. This
allows the RUGGEDCOM RS920W to transfer data for connected serial port and Ethernet devices via an installed
Wireless Access Point. The RUGGEDCOM RS920W is capable of wireless data rates of up to 54 Mbps whose
bandwidth is available for the combined device traffic volume emanating from two serial ports and two Ethernet
ports.
Static authentication support is provided by WPA-PSK. For authentication by an access point and a RADIUS
server, the RUGGEDCOM RS920W supports IEEE 802.1X/RADIUS for wireless user traffic and distributing dynamic
encryption keys. All wireless communications are protected by modern network security features, including
strong encryption protocols using WPA with TKIP and even WPA2/802.11i with 128-bit AES encryption. Static
authentication support is provided by WPA-PSK. For additional centralized control, the RUGGEDCOM RS920W also
supports IEEE 802.1X/RADIUS for wireless user traffic and distributing dynamic encryption keys.
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W provides a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference and heavy electrical
surges typical of environments found on plant floors and curb-side traffic control cabinets. An operating
temperature range of -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F) coupled with hazardous location certification (Class I Division
2), optional conformal coating and a galvanized steel enclosure allows the RUGGEDCOM RS920W to be placed in
almost any location.
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W can be mounted on a DIN rail or panel for efficient use of cabinet space.
The integrated power supply supports a wide range of voltages (88-300 VDC or 85-264 VAC) for worldwide
operability.
The RUGGEDCOM RS920W's superior ruggedized design and embedded RUGGEDCOM Rugged Operating System
(ROS) provides superior system reliability and advanced networking features making it ideally suited for creating
Ethernet networks for mission-critical, real-time, control applications.
