Description
SPN-CPAP
Spontaneous Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
Spontaneous breathing at a raised pressure level in
order to increase the functional residual capacity
(FRC).
Tube (Invasive ventilation)
The Carina is used to provide invasive ventilation to
the appropriate patients. The following guidelines
should be considered prior to use.
Using invasive ventilation
A heated humidification system or HME should
always be used during invasive applications. The
Carina invasive hose system configuration and
accessories required for normal operation are illus-
trated in chapter “Preparation”. See page 40 to 45.
In general, as circuit pressure decreases, the
potential for CO
2
re-breathing increases. Lower
pressure produces less flow through the exhalation
port, which may not purge all CO
2
from the circuit
to prevent re-breathing. The exhalation valve circuit
system (VentStar Carina ExpV, MP 00 313 or Expi-
ration Vent, MP 00 220) reduces the level of CO
2
re-breathing compared to the level associated with
VentStar Carina LeakV (MP 00 312) when low
pressures are present.
Using invasive ventilation with VentStar Carina
LeakV (MP 00 312)
The Carina with the circuit offers a single limb cir-
cuit and requires an intentional leak valve instead
of an actively controlled exhalation valve to remove
exhaled gases from the circuit. Therefore, never
connect the device on the patient while Carina is
not operating. When the Carina unit is not operat-
ing, the VentStar Carina LeakV (MP 00 312) does
not allow sufficient exhaust to eliminate CO
2
from
the circuit. Substantial CO
2
re-breathing will occur.
