1 Safety

b

Read these operating instructions before using the device.

b

Connection, assembly, and settings must be performed by

competent technicians.

b

Do not connect external I/O signals to the device while it is

powered. This may damage the device.

b

Protect the device from moisture and dirt during operation.

b

Do not use the device in areas with risk for explosion.

b

Safe operation of lasers (accessory) depend on the type of

lasers being used. Carefully read the safety instructions in

the laser’s manual.

2 Product Specification

Ranger C is a high-speed 3D camera that can measure up to

30,000 shape profiles/s. The camera can also operate in a

MultiScan mode, where it can simultaneously measure 3D,

grayscale, scatter, gloss, etc.
The Ranger serves as a data streamer, from which the

measurement data is transferred through a CameraLink

connection to a PC for further processing.

The Ranger C can be started, stopped and configured by

applications running on the PC. Note that the Ranger C

Development software is required to build such applications.
The Ranger C is intended to be the vision component in a

machine vision system.

The ISM Radio Frequency Classification is Group 1, Class A

(EN55011).

Warning:

Class A equipment is intended to be used in an

industrial environment.

3 Connections

 B

Ranger C is connected to a 12 … 24 V DC power supply, and

to a PC running Windows 7/XP equipped with a CameraLink

frame grabber board:

b

The power supply is connected to the Power I/O connector

(14-pin female LEMO connector).

b

The frame grabber board in the PC is connected to the

CameraLink connector (26 position MDR female plug)

b

I/O signals that are used, for example pulse trigger signals

from encoders or the laser trigger signal from the Ranger C

camera, are also connected to the Power I/O connector.

4 System Requirements

b

 PC

Recommended: Windows 7/XP Professional,

3 GHz processor, 1024 MB memory,

800 MHz bus speed.

For evaluation, a PC with lower specifications

may be sufficient.

b

 Cables

- CameraLink  Up to 10 m when using a CameraLink pixel

clock rate of 33 MHz.

Up to 3 m for a pixel clock rate of 66 MHz.

- Power I/0

Up to 50 m.

5 Installation

 C

b

Install the frame grabber board (

 a

) and the Ranger C

Development software (

 b

) on the PC.

b

Attach a lens to the Ranger C (

 c

).

b

Mount the Ranger C, additional light sources, and other

equipment to be used by the vision system such as encod-

ers and photoelectric switches for triggering.

b

If the I/O signals are used, connect the equipment using the

signals to the Power I/O connector of the Ranger C.

A Ranger M/C Power-I/O terminal (

 d

) can also be used

for connecting I/O signals to the Ranger C. It offers screw

terminals for connecting the signals, and connects to the

Ranger C with a SAH Power & I/O cable (

 e

).

b

Connect the CameraLink connector on the Ranger C to a

CameraLink connector on the frame grabber board installed

in the PC, using a CameraLink cable (

 f

). The PC should be

unpowered.

b

 Connect an unpowered 12 … 24 V DC power supply (

 g

) to

the Power I/O connector on the Ranger C, or to the power

plug on the Ranger M/C Power-I/O terminal.

b

 Switch on the power supply.

6 Service and Maintenance

The Ranger C contain no user serviceable parts inside. The

warranty of the device will be void if opened.

b

Check screw connections and connectors at regular

intervals.

b

Clean the housing with a soft cloth, dry or dampened with a

mild water diluted cleaning agent without powder additives.

In case of unit failure, please contact SICK or a SICK represen-

tative that delivered the unit for further instructions.

Important for installation

b

Ensure that both peripherals and the Ranger C are

unpowered before connecting them

b

Ensure that connected peripherals or I/O signals are

never powered when the Ranger C is unpowered.

b

Camera housing must be connected to chassis ground

and the complete system should be installed as an

electrically shielded installation.

To prevent ground loops:

b

Connect the camera DC ground (Pin 13) to the 0 V on the

DC power supply, never to chassis ground.

b

Always use an isolated DC power supply.
