Be Aware of the Working Environment
Figure 3
Always
keep proper footing and do not overreach.
Maintain your balance at all times during operation.
Avoid long-term
operation in very hot or
very cold weather.
Never
operate this
unit if any safety
guards are missing or
damaged.
Make sure handgrips are free of foreign
substances such as lubricant and pitch.
Before moving to
another job site, stop
the engine and install
the blade cover.
Do not allow cutters to contact
buildings or other hard objects
during operation. If a cutter should
bind fast in a cut, stop the engine
immediately. Remove the cause of
the bind before proceeding.
Inspect the cutting site thoroughly prior to
operation. Remove objects that could get
entangled by the cutter blade. Note the
locations of fence posts and other fixed
objects and avoid cutting them.
Avoid cutting large or
extremely woody branches.
Doing so can shorten
cutter life, and damage the
gearcase.
Never
cut metal objects
or wire with the blade.

Troubleshooting Guide
Does the engine
crank?
Faulty recoil starter.
Fluid in the crankcase.
Internal damage.
Consult with an authorized
servicing dealer.
NO
Good
compression?
Loose spark plug.
Excess wear on
cylinder, piston, rings.
Tighten and re-test.
Consult with an authorized
servicing dealer.

Does the tank
contain fresh
fuel of the
proper grade?
Fuel contaminated
or stale.
Refill with clean fresh unleaded
gasoline with a pump octane of
87 or higher, mixed with 50:1
Shindaiwa Premium 2-cycle mixing
oil or an equivalent high quality
2-cycle mixing oil. Re-start.

Is fuel visible
and moving in
the return line
when priming?
Check for clogged fuel
filter and/or vent.
Clean as required.
Replace fuel filter;
Check for proper venting. Replace
vent as necessary. Re-start.
NO
Is there spark at
the spark plug
wire terminal?
The ignition switch
is OFF (“O”).
Shorted ignition.
Faulty ignition unit.
Move switch to
ON (“I”); re-start.
Consult with an authorized

Check the
spark plug…
If the plug is wet, excess
fuel may be in the
cylinder.
The plug may be fouled
or improperly gapped.
The plug may be
damaged internally or
is the wrong size.
Crank the engine with the
plug removed and the ignition off,
replace the plug, and re-start.
Clean and re-gap the plug to
0.024 inch (0.6 mm). Re-start.
Replace the plug with a
Champion CJ8 or equivalent
spark plug of the correct heat
range. For electromagnetic
compliance (EMC) use a
NGK BMR6A resistor plug.
Adjust the spark plug electrode
gap to 0.24 inch (0.6 mm). Re-start.
