TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Read and understand

safety and operating

instructions in this manual
before doing any work on
pump!

Only qualified person-

nel should electrically

test pump motor.

DISCONNECT POWER

TO MOTOR BEFORE

WORKING ON PUMP.

Close

suction and discharge gate
valves.

FAILURE TO PUMP; REDUCED CAPACITY
OR DISCHARGE PRESSURE

Pump Loses Prime / Suction Leaks

1.

Make sure there are no leaks in suction piping. Trap lid
cover must be air tight.

2.

Inspect trap O-ring for cuts or nicks. Replace if neces-
sary. Lubricate with petroleum jelly before installation.

3.

Make sure suction pipe inlet to pump is well below
water level to prevent pump from sucking air.

4.

Replace suction trap gasket if defective.

5.

Suction lift of 6 - 8' (2 - 2.5m) will reduce performance.
Suction lift in excess of 8' (2.5m) will prevent pump-
ing and cause pump to lose prime. Move pump closer
(vertically) to water source. Check size of suction pipe.

Pump Does Not Operate

1.

Check and clean suction trap, impeller, fittings, or trap
strainer.

2.

Check and clean pool filter.

3.

Check for worn impeller or diffuser and replace.

4.

Make sure gate valves are fully open.

5.

Suction piping is too small.

6.

Motor internal thermal overload protector is open.
Motor runs too hot. Turn power to motor off. Check
for proper voltage.

7.

Check GFCI for proper operation according to GFCI
manufacturer's instructions.

Mechanical Troubles / Noise

1.

Make sure suction and discharge piping are supported.

2.

Securely mount pump on concrete platform for qui-
etest performance.

3.

Air leak in suction line. Repair leak and tighten trap lid.

4.

Check pump impeller; clean out debris.

5.

Cavitation -

Remove suction flow restrictions.

Increase pipe size.

Decrease number of fittings in suction piping.

Reduce flow by throttling discharge gate valve.

Electrical

1.

Pump may be running too slowly; check voltage at
motor terminals and at meter while pump is running.
If low, see wiring instructions or consult power com-
pany. Check for loose connections.

2.

Pump may be too hot.

A. Check line voltage. If less than 90% or more than

110% of rated voltage, consult a licensed electri-
cian.

B. Increase ventilation.

C. Reduce surrounding temperature.

D. Tighten any loose connections.

3.

Motor internal thermal overload protector is open.
Motor runs too hot. Turn power to motor off. Check
for proper voltage. Check for proper impeller or im-
peller rubbing.

4.

Circuit breaker trips repeatedly.

A. Breaker must be of adequate capacity.

B. For GFCI breaker, test according to GFCI manufac-

turer's instructions.

C. Make sure no other appliances or lights are on cir-

cuit.

D. Make sure there is only one GFCI on the circuit.

WARNING

Hazardous voltage. Can
shock, burn, or cause
death.

Disconnect power before
working on pump or motor.
