Maintenance
SPB Operation Manual
Removing safety devices
Sometimes you will have to remove a safety guard in
order to perform maintenance. For these situations, you
must take extra care to be sure of your own safety, and
that of your co-workers. If you have to put your hands,
feet or any other body part into a part of the machine
that would normally be guarded, be sure that the power
is turned off and that the handle is locked to prevent
someone else from reactivating it. You should also put
a “DO NOT OPERATE” sign on the controls or over the
electric panel. Lock out tags were provided with your
boom when it was delivered.
To lock out the power on an SPB follow these steps:
1.
Turn the handle 90˚ from vertical to horizontal and
line up the exposed tab with the hole positioned at
nine o’clock.
2. Pull the tab from the handle to expose the slot.
3. Insert padlock through the slot and lock it

Before restarting the machine, be sure to put away all
tools, parts and supplies, and clear the area of person-
nel. If your company has a “lock out - tag out” policy in
place, abide by it.
Replacing the hydraulic pump
It is highly recommended prior to the installation of any
model/manufacture of hydraulic pump(s) that the drive
spline be lubricated with a special pre-assembly grease
(Figure 3). Schwing recommends Optimoly Paste White
T to add extended life to the spline and related parts.
Optimoly Paste White T is available in cartridge or aero-
sol form, and can also be used in other pre-assembly
work.
