SaLeWa via Ferrata Set
Please read these instructions carefully before
each use and keep them close at hand.
Product labels:
Name of manufacturer: SALEWA
CE 0408: Number of certifying body: TÜV AUS-
TRIA Services GmbH – A-1015 VIENNA – Kru-
gerstraße 16
Serial no.: The last two numbers indicate the
year of manufacture.
EN 958/ UIAA 128: The standard with which the
product complies. Carabiner: Breaking load in
kN (kilonewton) in the following order: maxi-
mum breaking load lengthwise, breaking load
widthwise, breaking load when hinge is open
An intact red safety band inside the protective
sleeve indicates the initial position for the brak-
ing system: this means the fall impact absorber
has not yet been deployed.
Area of Use and Safety Notes: This Via Ferrata
Set is only to serve as a safety measure on fixed
rope climbing routes (klettersteig/via ferrata).
Only use your Via Ferrata Set with harnesses that
comply with EN 12277. For your safety, wear a
helmet that complies with EN 12492. Take care
to wear suitable footwear and suitable clothing.
Warning: Via ferrata sets have been tested in
accordance with standards to withstand a load
of 80kg. This Salewa via ferrata set is suitable
for persons with an overall weight (including
equipment) of 50-120 kilogrammes. People, es-
pecially children, who are considerably lighter
will experience a greater impact during a fall in
a via ferrata set. Anyone weighing under 50 kg
must always be secured with an additional rope
in all sections of a climb where there is a risk of
falling. Where a risk of falling exists, we recom-
mend all adults to climb directly below/behind
children and to only select via ferrata that suita-
bly match the skill level of the children involved,
in order to avoid falls occurring.
Proper use:
• The energy absorbing lanyard is designed for
use on via ferrata.
• The Ergo Zip features an innovative roll-up
system (zip) on the securing arms which short-
ens these to the actual length required. A strap
runs through each, the zip itself does not bear
weight and so is not directly relevant to safety.
• Put on your climbing harness ( seat and chest
harnesses, seat harness or full-body har-
ness) Attach the sewn-down via ferrata sling to
the harness by means of a lark’s foot knot.
• Both carabiners must be hooked to the safety
cable at all times. When you come to an an-
chor, transfer one carabiner at a time to the
new section of cable (never unhook both at the
same time). This ensures that you are always
securely connected to the cable. See fi gures
1, 2 and 3.
• All parts of the safety chain (harness, rope, car-
abiners, slings, safety devices, etc.) must com-
ply with EN standards.
• Pull the securing arms lengthwise along the
carabiners and not on the housing. In addition,
do not impose extra weight to the housing or
use it for pulling up.
• Please ensure that this product is compatible
with all your other pieces of equipment.
• Professional climbers and rental outlets are
required to instruct their customers on how to
use via ferrata sets and to provide them with
this instruction manual. A prior visual check of
all via ferrata sets is obligatory each time they
are used.
Precautionary measures:
• Avoid bringing the lanyard into contact with
sharp edges and similar potentially abrasive
points.
• Water or ice can make the energy absorbing
lanyard wear more quickly, which in turn will
make it less stable: apply more stringent safety
measures!
• Do not open the housing of the Ergo Zip your-
self. It must to be brought to the dealer for
maintenance or inspection.
• Energy absorbing lanyards must not be used in
temperatures exceeding 80°C.
• A rescue plan must be in place before and dur-
ing use to deal with any diffi culties that may
arise.
• This product is a piece of personal safety
equipment. The lanyard may sustain serious
damage not visible to the naked eye if it is not
used properly.
• Never use a via ferrata set that has been re-
paired or modified. For example, it is prohib-
ited to tie knots in the via ferrata set as this
weakens the set‘s structure. Adhesive tape also
weakens the set‘s material and makes it impos-
sible to perform a proper visual check.
Looking after your energy absorbing lanyard:
• The protective sleeve must be opened before
and after each use to inspect the red band for
tears or defects. If the red safety band is dam-
aged, the absorber is to be replaced immedi-
ately.
• Energy absorbing lanyards must not come into
contact with chemicals such as acids. Chemi-
cals can cause damage to the fi bres that is not
visible to the naked eye.
• Avoid unnecessary exposure to UV rays. Store
the energy absorbing lanyard in a cool, dark
and dry environment away from direct heat.
The same applies to transport conditions.
• Clean in warm water only or with a damp cloth,
then wipe dry. The energy absorber‘s pouch
can be reclosed and is easily cleaned and
dried. Clean the housing of the Ergo Zip with
a damp cloth only. Avoid contact with excess
water (the spring inside is lubricated and can
rust if in contact with water).
• After cleaning, dry the energy absorber in a
dark place away from sources of heat. Dry the
securing arms in extended position and dab
the housing dry.
• Use only lukewarm water or a damp cloth to
clean the lanyard, then wipe it dry. The pock-
et on the energy absorbing lanyard can be
opened and closed, and is therefore easy to
clean and dry.
• After cleaning, allow the lanyard to dry in a dark
place away from direct heat (+15°C – +25°C).
• Use only suitable disinfectants that do not
damage synthetic materials to disinfect the
lanyard.
• Inspect the energy absorbing lanyard and the
seams before and after every use.
• This product must also be inspected every
three months if used regularly and annually if
used occasionally.
• Do not repair visible damage.
Stop using the product immediately if the ener-
gy absorbing lanyard was activated during a fall
(the lanyard has been stretched or ripped).
Product life:
However, the actual product life will depend
solely on the condition of the energy absorb-
ing lanyard, which in turn is affected by a wide
range of factors including the manner and fre-
quency of use, abrasion, UV exposure, moisture,
climatic infl uences, etc.
Under extreme conditions, the energy absorb-
ing lanyard may be used only once, or not at all
if it is damaged before being used for the fi rst
time (e.g. during transport).
The energy absorbing lanyard must be replaced
immediately if:
• you notice damage during an inspection
• the lanyard comes into contact with chemicals
• there is even the slightest doubt it is safe to
use
• the product was involved in a fall where the
energy absorbing lanyard was activated (if the
lanyard fi bres have been stretched or ripped)
