The free fall distance must be 
determined and added to the value 
from the table The free fall distance 
can be determined by using the for-
mula:
FF = L + D – H 
FF = Free Fall 
L = the length of the lanyard. 
D = the height of the worker’s D-ring 
from the walking-working surface. This 
can normally be assumed to be 5 ft. 
H = Height of the HLL from the 
walking-working surface. Please note 
that the height of the HLL is not neces-
sarily the height of the anchorage. 
Consider the sag of the cable.

For example, a 121-ft. span of 
SWHR is 7 ft. above the walking-working 
surface, and 2 workers will be using the 
lifeline with 6-ft. shock absorbing lanyards. 
Calculating the free fall: The free fall is calculated 
by using the  equation.
(6 ft (lanyard). + 5 ft.( D-ring height) – 7 ft (above the 
walking working surface) = 4 ft. free fall)
