Cable Preparation and Termination

Recommended cable type would be shielded twisted pair (4 pair).
Overall diameter 5mm (max). Individual wires should be 26 a.w.g.
(stranded), overall diameter 1mm max.

Before preparing cable, slide the strain relief onto the cable (Figure 1).
Note that for an angle entry plug, the body is assembled at the end of
this instruction.

Remove the sheath (jacket) of the cable by between 25 and 30mm.
Turn back the shield and cut the paper tape and centre cotton at the
bottom of the sheath. Fold back shield braid by about 8 to 9mm. If drain
wire is available, cut away excess braid and wind wire around the

sheath (Figure 2).

Using about 35mm length of copper shielding (foil) (10mm width), RS
stock no. 512-266, wind it over the braid or drain wire (Figure 3).

Straighten out wires and feed through the connector guide plate
(remember to locate in correct colour order). Cut the wires square,
19mm from the end of the sheath. Slide the guide plate to the end of
the wires prior to loading into the connector body. Note the guide plate
is wedge shaped in profile and should be positioned as in Figure 4.

Carefully feed the cable with guide plate into the body of the connector
until the ends of the conductors are fully seated (butted) in the body
(Figure 5).

Carefully load the cable/connector body assembly into the locator and
fit into the tool jaws as shown in Figure 6. Ensure that the earth
crimping ears are set within the tool jaws correctly, then crimp. The pin
which holds the locator can be fitted on either side of the tool for right
or left hand use.

For full shielding the plates at the back of the connector body should be
crimped as follows. Insert the connector body into the end of the tool
jaws (Figure 7) and crimp down the rear plates.
The connector is now ready for conductor termination. Using crimp tool,
RS  stock no. 455-208, or tool with case, RS stock no. 486-072, and the
die set provided with this tool kit, RS stock no. 455-242, terminate the
connector conductors using the instructions supplied with RS stock
nos. 455-208 or 486-072.

Finally, for straight entry plugs, RS stock no. 455-220, bring the strain
relief over the connector body (Figure 8A) to locate on the retaining
catches (two each side). For angle entry plugs, RS stock no. 455-236,
the cable guide is in two halves. Lay the cable into one half (Figure 8B)
with the connector set in the grooves of the guide. Select the guide to
determine which orientation (left or right) of cable entry required. Bring
the other half over the assembly and snap together. Slide the strain
relief up to the guide and engage.
