Sensors contain a positive temperature co-efficient (PTC), platinum
resistance temperature sensor. The temperature/resistance characteristic is
linear and is given below:

The resistance (and therefore temperature) of the sensor can be taken
directly to a controller. For this application, two wires are provided (three
wires on pipe strap-on sensor - RS Stock no. 813-890). If 3 or 4 wire
resistance compensation is required, double up the cable connections to the
sensor terminals. Alternatively, sensors can be used in conjuction with
current transmitters, which fit into the sensor enclosure to provide a 4-20mA,
loop-powered signal (-10/+40°C): RS stock no. 376-1483, -10/+110°C: RS
stock no. 376-1506.

Physical installation

RS stock no.
376-1477 Space air temp.

Affix back plate to wall or back-box in a

location which excludes drafts and direct
sunlight. Use terminal supplied for connecting
to sensor

813-862 Duct air temp.

Drill 6.2mm hole in duct and insert probe. Mark
off fixing holes, remove and drill. Fix securely to
duct. Use M20 cable entry for cable gland or
conduit. Do not install until the system has
been started up and run for some hours, in
order to remove contaminants. Avoid high
vibration areas.

813-878 Outside air temp. Use sensor as template for fixing holes. Use

gland or threaded conduit as above.

813-884 Immersion temp.

For liquid temperature measurement, use in
conjunction with pocket (brass: RS stock no.
813-941, stainless: RS stock no. 813-957). Fix
pocket into 1/2" BSPT pipe boss and insert
sensor into pocket, ensuring that the end butts
up against the end of the pocket. Tighten
pocket screw against probe until firmly
secured.

813-890 Pipe strap temp.  Fix sensor lug to pipe using stainless steel

strap provided.

Electrical installation

1. Make electrical connections to sensor only after all other electrical

installation and test has been completed.

2. It is recommended that screened cable be used on all installation, with

screens being earthed at the controller. Signal cables should not be laid
in close proximity to power cables or other sources of interference.

3. Connections to the sensing element can be two, three or four wire.

Sensor resistance is measured across any red/white pair.

4. Note:  Thermistors exposed to excess voltage and/or current will

usually fail closed circuit. Units failing in this way will not be
repaired or replaced under warranty.
