Self Rescue

Self-rescue is an essential skill required to be a safe kiteboarder. You should learn relia-

ble self-rescue techniques at an accredited kiteboarding school or from a certified

instructor. In the event that you have to rescue yourself, use the self-rescue drag han-

dles which are built into the wingtips. These handles will help you hold the kite during

your self-rescue body drag towards the beach.

Remember:

• Do not go farther from land than you are able to swim.

• Use a kite leash that you can disengage from your body in case of an unforeseeable

emergency.

• If you are using a board leash, always wear a helmet.

3. Wind Strength and Kite Size

Approximate Wind Speed Table

The table is only to be used as a rough guide when choosing the proper kite size for

you. When selecting a kite size, there are many other factors to consider such as your

ability level, consistency and strength of the wind, size of the board you are using, and

your body weight. RRD kite sizing is based on the actual surface area of the kite expres-

sed in square meters.
