OPERATION
START-UP
In the following procedures, the item numbers listed in ( ) refer to Figure 3-A on page 3-3 (unless
otherwise noted). These illustrate the location of operator controls.
WARNING: Read manual before starting.
Train all operators before they work with this machine.
Do not smoke around the unit.
Wear protective gear and clothing.
Operators must meet all state & local licensing requirements.
START-UP & ENGINE OPERATION
1. Place the Transmission Selector Lever
(item 1) in the neutral position. A Neutral Start
Switch has been installed to prevent operation of
the engine starter when the transmission is not in
neutral.
2. Apply the Park/Emergency brake (item 2).
3. Set the Engine Throttle (item 3) to one-half
speed.
4. Turn the Ignition Switch key which
activates the engine starter. As soon as the
engine starts, release the switch.
Do not crank engine for more
than 30 seconds at a time.
Continuous cranking can cause
starter failure.
NOTE: IF THE STARTER DOES NOT TURN
THE ENGINE OVER, shut off the ignition key
immediately and make no further attempts to
start the engine until the condition is
corrected. Refer to Trouble Shooting Section 5
of this manual (or the Diesel Engine manual)
for possible solutions. For further analysis,
contact your Diesel Engine Service Dealer.
Allow the starter to cool down for
2 minutes between unsuccessful
attempts to start the engine.
Failure to follow these guidelines
can damage the starter motor.
5. Move the Engine Throttle to idle as soon
as the engine starts.
Be sure oil pressure is observed
within 15 Seconds after starting
the engine. If no oil pressure is
shown on the gauge in 15
seconds, shut down the engine
and determine the cause.
6. Check the gauges on the dash panel (see
Figure 3-B) for proper readings and make the
necessary corrections.
7. Adjust the position of the seat and mirrors
(if so equipped) for the operator's convenience.
8. When the engine is warm and running
properly, fasten the seat belt and familiarize
yourself with the operation of the controls.
CAUTION: Always wear seat
belts when operating the broom.
Sudden speed changes or a roll
over will throw an unrestrained
operator from the machine.
Do not idle the engine for more
than 10 minutes. Excess idling
can damage the engine. During
idling, combustion chamber
temperature drops and fuel may
not burn completely. Unburned
fuel will dilute the crankcase oil,
reducing its viscosity and its ability
to protect the engine.
