Basic Recording with the VS-880
In some instances it may be desirable to send an incoming signal directly to the VS8F-1 before it reaches
the faders on the VS-880. This is called ÒinsertingÓ the effect and it is useful for monitoring an effected
signal without hearing the dry (uneffected) Input. Insert effects are great for adding compression to a vocal
or distortion to a guitar. Since the VS8F-1 contains two independent effects processors we can use Effect 2
as an insert effect without changing our Effect 1 setup. Try connecting an electric guitar to Input A 2 (if a
guitar is not available, any audio source will work). Use the following procedure to insert Effect 2.
C. Route Channel 2 to EFFECTS 2
1) Press the CH EDIT button 2 to select Channel 2. Now, the effects settings we make will be for Channel 2.
2) Next, hold SHIFT and press the CH EDIT button 8 (EFFECT-2). Since we held shift, we accessed the
feature with the border around it, which in this case is EFFECT-2.
3) Now, turn the TIME/VALUE dial clockwise to select ÒInsertÓ in the display. Remember our signal path
diagram on page 8? Well, we just setup the signal coming in on Input A 2 to be sent to the effects
processor after it leaves the EQ, and then the effected (wet) signal only, will be ÒinsertedÓ back into the
audio chain before the fader.
D. Select Effects
Now that we have put the effects processor into the signal path, letÕs decide which of the effects we
would like to use.
1) Press EFFECT (under EDIT CONDITION).
2) Continue pressing EFFECT until the display reads ÒEFFECT 2?Ó Press the YES/ENTER button to
confirm that we will be entering the edit mode for EFFECT-2.

3) Turn the TIME/VALUE dial to select the desired effect. A good guitar effect to start from might be #57
ÒGA:MatchLead.Ó This is a model of a Matchless amp. There are plenty of other great amp models as
well as killer delays, choruses, and guitar multis. Choose whatever effect you want.
4) Press the YES/ENTER button to confirm and activate your effect choice.
Now that we have added effects we can continue with the recording process, as in Step F in the Basic
Recording section (p.14).
Virtual Tracks
Okay, so you recorded a pretty good guitar solo. Are you
sure
you can play it better next time? Or, your
vocalist finally got the inflection and feel right, but there were some notes that were not quite on pitch. Do
you try it again, hoping that it all comes together on the 12th take? These are imposing questions that you
will inevitably deal with as a songwriter, producer, and/or musician. Before now, you had to make a critical
decision: record over the last take hoping the next will be the keeper or, leave it alone and settle for what
might not be the best performance for fear that itÕs as close as this artist is gonna get. But now, the VS-880
removes this kind of stress from the process with a feature called Virtual Tracks.

LetÕs continue on now with our recording scenario with the assumption that you just recorded on Track 2.
To create another recording on Track 2 you do not have to record over the first one. Instead, we can simply
switch to one of the eight Virtual Tracks. Think of each of the eight Tracks on the VS-880 as having eight
layers. Each Virtual Track is completely independent from the other and you can mix and merge as you
see fit. You can record up to 64 Tracks total and any eight can be played at a time.
