BASIC RECORDING
All right, now that you know how the VS-880 is organized, itÕs time to get busy making some music. While
the previous sections were designed to get you familiar with the VS-880 from a theoretical standpoint,
these next sections will get you familiar with the VS-880 from a hands-on operations standpoint. To start
off, we will go through one of the most basic and most common things you will do with the VS-880 Ð
recording with a microphone.
If you need to begin with a new song, press the SONG button under EDIT CONDITION to display ÒSong
New?Ó Press the YES/ENTER button and continue pressing it until the VS-880 begins creating a new song
location. It will display ÒNow WorkingÓ and then ÒComplete.Ó

When creating a new song it is a good idea to name that song. If you do not name the song the VS-880
automatically assigns a name such as ÒINIT SONG 001 or 002Ó, depending on how many new songs have
been created during the current recording session. After multiple sessions you may end up with more than
one song with the same name at different song
number
locations which can be confusing. Use the
following procedure to name your song:
1) Press SONG until ÒSong Name/Prtct?Ó is displayed.
2) Press YES/ENTER.
3) Use the TIME/VALUE dial and the CURSOR buttons to select characters.
4) Press DISPLAY to return to the previous screen.
Recording on Track 1 with a Microphone:
In this section, we will go through the procedure you might use to record vocals or any other acoustic
instrument. This is the fast approach to getting a solid, clean sound without recording EQ or effects.
A. Select the MIXER MODE
To record quickly WITHOUT recording (printing) effects (from the VS8F-1 expansion board) or EQ,
select INPUT

TRACK mode.
1) If youÕre not already in INPUT

TRACK mode, hold the SHIFT button and press the SELECT button.
NOTE: If youÕre recording with a microphone in the same room as your playback monitors (speakers),
make sure to turn the amplifier volume all the way down before recording to prevent:

Feedback and possible damage to your speakers and ears.
¥
Recording the audio coming from the monitors into the microphone.
ItÕs probably best in this case to use headphones to monitor the playback from the VS-880.
B. Plug in the microphone
For this example, we will be using a microphone plugged directly into Input A 1 for recording onto
Track 1. Plug a dynamic microphone (such as a Shure
SM-58) directly into Input A 1.
Most microphones use a 3 pin XLR connector. This is also known as a ÒcannonÓ jack. To convert the
XLR connector to a ÒTip Ring SleeveÓ connector (1/4Ó jack) for use with the VS-880 Inputs, you can use
an XLR to TRS impedance transformer or simply buy an XLR to TRS 1/4Ó adapter. You can even buy
microphone cables with a female XLR connector for the microphone on one end and a 1/4Ó jack for
the VS-880 on the other. You can get these at most consumer electronic stores. Many music stores
carry them as well.
NOTE: Microphones are wired in one of two configurations, Òpin 2 hotÓ or Òpin 3 hot.Ó The 1/4Ó TRS Input
jacks on the VS-880 are Òtip hot.Ó Make sure that the adapter you use corresponds with your microphone
and sends the hot pin (2 or 3) to the ÒtipÓ of the TRS connection.
