Einige Flugtechniken

Thermikfliegen in der Ebene 

Das Modell wird im Hochstart auf Ausgangshöhe
gebracht.

Thermischer Aufwind entsteht durch Einstrahlung der
Sonne auf den Erdboden bzw. bodennahe Luftschichten.
Dadurch bilden sich Warmluftblasen, die sich vom Boden
ablösen und hochsteigen. Kommt das Modell in eine sol-
che Blase, wird es mit den aufsteigenden Luftschichten
hochgetragen. Um die Luftblase auszunutzen, kurvt man
ein und läßt das Modell Vollkreise fliegen (siehe Kreisflug).
Es muß jedoch daran gedacht werden, rechtzeitig aus der
Thermikblase wieder herauszukurven und nicht den
Segler einfach mit Tiefenruder zu Boden zu zwingen.

Das Finden von Thermik ist von der Tageszeit abhängig.
Tagsüber eignen sich helle Flächen, wie braune Äcker
oder Getreidefelder am besten. Sie geben rasch Wärme
ab; dadurch wird die Bildung von Thermikblasen begün-
stigt. Grüne Flächen wie Wälder und Wiesengebiete spei-
chern die Warmluft tagsüber. Über solchem Gelände kann
erfolgreich in der Abendthermik gesegelt werden.

Hangfliegen

Das Modell wird aus der Hand gestartet

Wird ein Hang von vorne mit möglichst gleicher
Windgeschwindigkeit bzw. Windstärke angeweht, kann
der so entstandene Hangaufwind zum Segeln genutzt
werden. Im Gegensatz zum thermischen Aufwind, der je
nach Wetterlage in Intervallen auftritt, weht der
Hangaufwind ziemlich gleichmäßig.

Bei der Auswahl eines geeigneten Hangs ist zu beachten,
daß dieser möglichst von vorn angeblasen wird. Es wird
immer in S-Schleifen vor der Hangkante geflogen, um
Höhe zu halten oder zu steigen.

Zum Landen fliegt man etwa auf Höhe der Hangkante und
baut Höhe ab. Die Landung selbst erfolgt zum Hang hin

A few flying techniques

Flat-field thermal flying

Launch the model by the bungee method and release the
tow.

Thermal lift occurs when the sun shines on the ground
and warms up the air close to it. Bubbles of warm air form
which eventually lift away from the ground and rise up
towards the clouds. If your model happens to hit this
warm bubble it will be carried up with the rising mass of
air. In order to exploit the air bubble to the full you have to
turn the model within it and keep it circling in the lift (see
“Circling”).

However, you must remember to exit the thermal before
the glider is dangerously far away. Do this by turning away
and out of the lift, and then let the model glide back down.
Don’t panic and apply down-elevator to reduce height.

The process of locating thermals varies with the weather
conditions and the time of day. In the daytime light-colou-
red surfaces such as bare earth or cornfields are your
best bet, as they quickly radiate the sun’s heat to the sur-
round air and this favours the formation of thermal bub-
bles. Green areas such as forests and green fields tend to
store the day’s warmth for longer, with the result that they
are good areas for thermal-hunting towards the evening.

Slope-soaring

The model is simply hand-launched from the top of the
ridge.

You need to seek out a slope with a fairly light but very
steady breeze blowing straight at and up the slope. In
these conditions you can use the rising air to keep your
glider aloft. In contrast to thermal lift, which tends to be
sporadic and varies with the weather conditions, slope lift
is fairly constant when conditions are good. When selec-
ting a suitable slope look for a site where the wind is blo-
wing virtually at right-angles to the slope face. Always fly
in a figure-of-eight pattern, turning away from the slope

Vols thermiques en plaine

Amener le modèle à son altitude idéale par treuillage.

Les ascendance thermiques sont provoquées par le
rayonnement solaire sur le sol ou sur les couches d’air à
l’approche du sol. Des bulles d’air chaud se forment de la
sorte qui se détachent du sol et prennent de l’altitude.
Lorsque le modèle s’engage dans l’une de ces bulles, il
est entraîné en altitude par le mouvement ascendant de la
bulle. Pour exploiter parfaitement la bulle, il faut y effec-
tuer des virages complets (spiraler).

Il faut toutefois ne pas oublier de sortir en temps voulu de
la bulle et non tenter de forcer le modèle à atterrir en
poussant la profondeur.

La recherche et la détection des bulles dépend de la sai-
son et de l’heure du jour. En milieu de journée, les surfa-
ces claires, les champs retournés ou les champs de
céréales constituent les meilleurs „générateurs“ de bulles.
Ils restituent rapidement la chaleur. Les prairies herbues
et les forêts emmagasinent la chaleur dans la journée et
la restituent le soir ce qui les rend donc propices aux vols
thermiques en soirée.

Vol de pente

Le modèle est lancé à la main.

Lorsqu’une pente est balayée de face par un vent autant
que possible régulier et relativement faible, il est possible
d’exploiter ce vent qui „remonte“ la pente pour faire voler
le planeur. Contrairement au vol thermique assuré par des
bulles „aléatoires“ le vent de pente est relativement régu-
lier.

Pour le choix de la pente, s’assurer que le vent souffle de
face. Voler toujours en S devant l’arête de la pente pour
conserver une certaine altitude ou en prendre.
Pour atterrir, amener le modèle approximativement au
niveau de l’arête de la pente et perdre de l’altitude. Atterrir
