5.4 Main Menu
The Main menu is the primary sonar control point. The following functions may
be performed from the Main Menu:
1. Set the Range.
2. Change the Ping Rate.
3. Change the Transmit Power.
4. Change the Pulse Width.
5. Change the Receiver Gain.
6. Change the Gain Mode.
7. Activate Automatic Gain.
5.4.1 Set the Range (Range)
The “Range” setting determines how far the SeaBat 8160
will “see”. The range
settings are operator selected between 5 and 5,000 meters. See
for
available range options and their associated standard ping rates.
Select the appropriate range scale to keep the horizontal bottom image at or
above the widest part of the sonar wedge:

depicts a proper range setting.
Diagram “B”
depicts an acceptable range setting for a swath that is
beginning to fade due to the effects of Attenuation and Spreading Loss.
Diagram “C”
depicts an incorrect range setting. Notice that the still
useable ends of the swath are being cut off by the limits of the range
setting.
5.4.2 Change the Ping Rate (MaxRate)
In some instances it may be beneficial to force a lower ping rate than that normal
rate associated with a particular range. Examples of this would be instances
when the vessel is moving at a very slow rate, and the operator wishes to
