Q: Can I use RHN to upgrade from Red Hat Linux 6.2 to Red Hat Linux 7?
A: RHN currently does not support any verion below Red Hat Linux 7. Support for Red Hat 6.2 will
be available soon and can be used to update all packages on your system.
Q: Can I get new software from RHN?
A: Yes. You can download enhancements and updates to the official Red Hat packages installed on
your systems directly from the Red Hat Network. If you’re looking for additional packages, check out
our Download site at http://www.redhat.com/download.
Q: Will Red Hat Network update packages that were not installed with the Red Hat distribution?
A: No. Red Hat Network currently supports all RPM packages installed from the Red Hat Linux CD,
Red Hat PowerTools CD, and the Red Hat Linux Applications CD.
Q: What version of Red Hat Linux do I have to run to be able to receive updates from Red Hat Net-
work?
A: Currently, you must be running Red Hat Linux 7.0 or above.
Q: What is an RPM package?
A: Developed by Red Hat, RPM stands for RPM Package Manager. RPM is a powerful package
manager that can be used to build, install, query, verify, update, and uninstall individual software
packages. Please refer to http://rpm.redhat.com/ for more details.
Q: How do I change my email address for notifications?
A: Logon to Red Hat Network from http://www.redhat.com/network, go to Preferences => Notifica-
tion Delivery. Under the
Email Notifications
section, edit the

Q: What is the difference between the
Red Hat Update Agent
and the
Red Hat Network Web
Application
?
A: Both allow you to retrieve the latest software packages for a registered system from RHN. However,
the
Red Hat Network Web Application
allows you to manage more than one registered system at
the same time through a Web interface and is more customizable.
Q: Why is something called
rhnsd
running on my system and what does it do?
A:
rhnsd
is the Red Hat Network Daemon. Every thirty minutes, it sends a request to Red Hat Net-
work asking for any notifications or updates and works in coordination with the
Red Hat Network
Web Application
to schedule automated tasks. It only sends information to Red Hat Network re-
quested by you. If you add a new system using the
Red Hat Network Web Application
, the next
time the Red Hat Network Daemon probes Red Hat Network it receives a request to return the infor-
mation you requested as part of your System Profile such as what package versions are installed on
your system.
