3 Commissioning the REA ScanCheck 3n
This chapter describes the installation and preparatory work required for the initial use of the REA
ScanCheck 3n.
3.1 Hardware installation
Separate installation on the REA ScanCheck 3n is not necessary. It is supplied ready for operation
and can be placed on a level table surface. Only one rechargeable battery is removed for transport,
in order to prevent any discharge due to an accidental switch-on. It must therefore be inserted in
the device before operation. The device is configured with standard pre-settings and can be used to
check and evaluate the majority of symbologies in accordance with GS1 standard requirements.
Make sure that the workplace has only diffused lighting and is not directly exposed to sunlight or
spotlight beams. In this way, influences by extraneous light during the measurements are avoided.
Measurements in the working areas with standardised light (e.g. in print shops) are also prohibited.
The REA ScanCheck 3n requires 4 rechargeable batteries, Mignon batteries or an external voltage
supply for operation. The power supply unit included in the delivery PoE supplies the voltage
directly to the REA ScanCheck 3n via the network cable from the “Data & Power out” connection.
This can also be used to recharge the batteries. An additional ne
twork cable from the “Data In”
connection on the PoE to the PC facilitates data communication via the network on which the REA
TransWin32 software is being used.
The four NiMH rechargeable batteries supplied ex works have a particularly low self-discharge.
In case of new delivery the batteries are enclosed, in case of return after a repair, three of the four
rechargeable batteries have been inserted prior to dispatch.
The device also operates without the rechargeable batteries inserted, or if a cell is missing, if the
power supply unit is plugged in and connected to the mains supply.
However, if the connection cable is disconnected, all programs will close without saving the data
and settings, and with no prior warning.
If the rechargeable batteries are deep discharged, there is a risk that the rechargeable batteries will
not be detected by the charging connection (charge LED does not light up). In this case, the
rechargeable batteries must be replaced. In some cases, the rechargeable batteries can be
reactivated by an external charger with single cell charging.
3.1.1 Charging the rechargeable batteries
When the device is delivered, 4 NiMH Mignon rechargeable batteries (size AA) are enclosed.
These have been tested and charged before delivery. The REA ScanCheck 3n can be operated for
around 2 to 3 hours without interruption with new and fully charged rechargeable batteries. If the
low power function is used for automatically switching the device off, the operating time can be
significantly increased.
