Cleaning the Wheels, Tires and Track
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups
for dirt and buildup, whichcancausepoorelectrical
contact and traction andprematurely wear outthe
neoprenetractiontires. Wheels and tires can be cleaned
usingdenatured (not rubbing) alcohol applied with a
cotton swab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid
and a clean rag or denatured (notrubbing) alcohol. Unplug thetransformer and wipe the
rails of the track, turning the rag frequently to ensurethatyouareusingcleanclothonthe
rails. Becausethemanufacturingprocess leaves a coatingonRealTraxcenterra il, you
should clean the railsafter the first 30 minutes of use(you may notice anelectrical smell
during initial use as the coating wears off;thisisnormal). Thereafter, keepaneyeonthe
track and clean it when it gets dirty to ensure good electrical contact and to lengthen the
life of the tires.
Traction Tire Replacement Instructions
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof
flanged drivers. While thesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat
some point.

ontheboileroftheengine. The smoke unitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wick that soaks upandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.

Withafeweasymaintenancesteps, youshouldenjoytrouble-free smoke unit operation
for years.
When preparingtorunthisengine, add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe

Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from
thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. These
screwscanbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.

Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive
wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.
Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead
screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.
Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand
reinstall thetire. Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating.
Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. Usearazorbladetotrimaway
anyexcesstir ethatdoesn'tseatitselfinsidethegrooveproperly.
