fordirtandbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectrical
contactandtractionandprematurelywearoutthe
neoprenetractiontires. Wheelsandtirescanbe
cleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied
withacottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid
andacleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol.
Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,
turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusing
cleanclothontherails. Becausethemanufacturing
processleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherailsafterthefirst
30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseasthecoating
wearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanitwhenitgets
dirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof
flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat
somepoint.
ProtoSmoke UnitOperation
®
Thissteamlocomotivecontainsasmokeunitthatoutputssmokethroughthesmokestack
ontheboileroftheengine. Thesmokeunitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wickthatsoaksupandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
Thesmokeisthenforcedoutofthestackbyasmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps,youshouldenjoytrouble-freesmokeunitoperation
foryears.
Whenpreparingtorunthisengine,add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe
smokestack. WerecommendM.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB,orLVTSfluids(a
smallpipetteofProtoSmokefluidisincluded). Donotoverfilltheunitorthefluid
mayleakoutandcoattheinteriorenginecomponents.

Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from
thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. Thesebolts
canbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.

Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive
wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.
Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead
screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.
Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand
reinstallthetire. Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating.
Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. Usearazorbladetotrimaway
anyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseatitselfinsidethegrooveproperly.
