7.2 Appendix B: Video Encoder
™ Bitrate Limits
Encode Bit Rate Limits:
The video encoding bit rate limits specified below are subjective suggestions based on limited
empirical testing. The QVENC4K encoder will allow you to enter any video stream bit rate from
500Kbps to 60Mbps, and will attempt to produce the best video quality it can, based on the video
bit rate you set. The encoder outputs the stream as a Capped Variable Bit Rate (VBR) stream,
meaning that it uses the value you specify as an upper limit on the peak bit rate. Unless noted
otherwise, all bitrates below assume full NTSC (59.94 fps) or PAL frame rates (50 fps).
Therefore, we have provided the values here are only as a general guideline to help with
estimating the expected network loading:
Maximum Video Encoding Stream Bit Rates:
60 Mbps
Minimum Suggested Stream Bit Rates for general content, such as movies:
(assumes audio bitrate of 160 Kbps)
H.264 (MPEG4-AVC High Profile, CBR mode):
12 Mbps for 2160p video resolution
6 Mbps for 1080p video resolution
4 Mbps for 1080i video resolution
2 Mbps for 720p video resolution
Note:
Video quality is subjective and content dependent. The minimum bitrates suggested above
may not produce acceptable video for any given application. As a general rule we suggest
that you use HEVC (H.265) encoding for best video quality, and adjust the bitrate based
on your own observations to suit your needs.
Decode Bitrate Limits
Bitrate limits related to receiving MPEG Transport Stream video from the network:
Maximum MPEG TS bitrates:
60 Mbps
Minimum MPEG TS bitrates:
500 Kbps
