LOCATING HOLES
When pre-drilled tubes have been inserted into the wing and tail covers, find the holes as
instructed in each sequence. Locate them with your finger nail then mark the location with a
Pencil. The location distance is typically called out during assembly.
Always heat seal a hole with a hot knife. Bare cut fabric will eventually “fray” if not sealed.
WING/TAIL COVER CUTTING AND HEAT-SEALING
The preferred method of cutting the polyester synthetic wing and tail surfaces is by the use of a
Sailmaker's hot knife. A hot knife is a soldering iron (pencil) with a blade at the tip which will cut
and heat seal in ONE step.
However, sometimes the correct tool is not easily available, and therefore some builders may have
to improvise.
If you are unable to obtain a hot knife, you may make your own by grinding or filing the tip of a
soldering iron or soldering pencil to form a 'knife like' blade.
OR
Refer to Figure 1-8 and carefully cut the polyester synthetic material with a razor knife or utility
knife. Refer to Figure 1-9 and carefully heat-seal the edges with a soldering pencil, soldering iron,
or soldering gun.
IMPORTANT
: Heat sealing is required on ALL cuts in the polyester synthetic wing or tail surfaces
as a means to keep the material from fraying after it has been cut.
