4.0 General safety warning and user tips
4.1 General warnings
WARNING!
• Driving an electric wheelchair requires a user to have
cognitive, physical and visual skills. The user must be able
to estimate and correct the results of actions taken when
operating the wheelchair.
• Always ensure that your wheelchair is switched off before
attempting to mount or dismount.
• Always ensure that you are able to operate all controls from
a comfortable position. Paying attention to your posture is
essential to ensure your continued comfort and well being.
• Always make sure that you can be seen clearly, especially if
you intend using your wheelchair in poor light.
• This wheelchair has been built to match the needs of a
particular user. If used by another user then it may need to
be adjusted and reprogrammed.
• Do not let children or others use your wheelchair.
• Avoid spilling liquids on to the controller or its connections.
Especially hot, sticky, sugary or corrosive liquids. Such
contamination may compromise the safe operation of the
control system.
• Quickie positioning belts are designed to position the user
only and will not protect you in an accident. You may even
receive further injury from the belts.
• Use the positioning belt, if applicable and make sure that it is
correctly fitted to the wheelchair and adjusted to the user.
• Driving the wheelchair under the influence of alcohol or
medicines that can affect your ability to drive is not permitted.
• No more than one person is to be seated in the wheelchair at
a time.
• Prevent the wheelchair from coming into contact with sea
water. Sea water is caustic and may damage the wheelchair.
• Prevent the wheelchair from coming into contact with sand.
Sand can permeate into the moving parts of the wheelchair,
causing unnecessary fast wear of these parts.
DANGER!
CHOKING HAZARD
– This mobility aid uses small parts which
under certain circumstances may present a choking hazard to
young children.
4.2 Features and options
NOTE:
Some of the options shown in this manual may not
be available in your country and may also restrict the overall
physical limits of the standard product (e.g. max. speed, user
weight limit, etc.). Those limitations are marked on the order
form, in the technical manual and in the owner’s manuals.
For further information please consult your Sunrise Medical
authorised dealer.
4.3 Kerbs
DANGER!
•
Never descend a kerb backwards. Please read carefully
the section 4.33 on kerb climbing in this manual before
attempting to mount and dismount any kerbs in your
wheelchair.
•
Do not attempt to climb or descend a series of steps or
use on escalators. It is unsafe to do so and could cause
personal injury or damage the chair. The Puma 40 has only
been designed to climb a single step or kerb.
•
We recommend that users with upper trunk instability wear
further customised restraint systems to keep the upright
body position during descending or ascending ramps,
kerbs or obstacles.
4.4 Routine service
The recommended service interval is one year.
(See service
history table in section 16).
4.5 Emergency freewheel
DANGER!
• Please remember that you have no braking facility when
the freewheel levers are moved from the normal drive (A)
position to the freewheel (B) position (Fig.4.1 - 4.2). Always
ensure an attendant is with you when bringing the chair into
the freewheel mode.
• The wheelchair must never be left with one or both levers in
the freewheel position. For an enhanced description of this
facility and its limitations to use please see section 5.2.
