9530/8530 External Clock Operation
The 9530 pulse generator has a special external clock circuit that allows for external clock
synchronization when using clock sources that have very narrow pulse widths and amplitudes.
Parameter:
Minimum
Maximum
Pulse Width
100 ps
-
Pulse Amplitude
50 mV
2.5 Volts Peak
Frequency
10 MHz
100 MHz
Insertion Delay
-
10 ns
Using the external clock function:
Enter the clocks/rate menu by pressing the menu button until the clocks/rate page is
reached.
Press the page button until clock source menu is displayed.
Select the source to External Osc or External w/ PLL.
Adjust the threshold level appropriate for the amplitude of the external clock source.
Adjust the rate to match the frequency of the external clock source.
When the source is set to External Osc a lower case e will appear in the bracketed area
of the screen (Figure 10).
A “?” will appear if the system does not lock onto the external clock source when in
External PLL mode. Once the system is locked on the external clock signal the “?”
will change to a “p”. If the “p” never appears or is sporadic possible problems are:
o
Threshold level not adjusted correctly.
o
External clock source not present.
o
External clock has excessive jitter.
o
Amplitude of external clock is changing.
