Terminology and acronyms
Uniform Resource Identifier is an address to locate a service on the
network by resolving the IP address with a DNS server.

Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier
assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical
network segment.

Internet Protocol address: an unique address used for the IP communic-
ation

The subnet mask splits the IP address between a network part and a
network interface identifier.

Domain Name System, is used to resolve an URI into an IP address.
DNS
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: for Automatic IP addresses as-
signment. DHCP server provides the machine with an IP address.
Generally requires no user intervention to obtain IP address. The DHCP
server automatically assigns an IP address to the system. It provides
also the Default Gateway IP address and preferred and alternate DNS
server IP addresses.

A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from
clients seeking resources from other servers for example to access the
World Wide Web.
Proxy
A gateway is a node (e.g. router) on a TCP/IP network that serves as
an access point to another network. A default gateway is the node on
the computer network that the network software uses when an IP ad-
dress does not match any other routes in the routing table.

Ping is a computer network utility used to test the reachability of a host
on an Internet Protocol (IP) network by sending Internet Control Message
Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to the target host and waiting for
an ICMP response. When a response is received the test is successful.
Remark: For security reasons some servers are configured to not re-
spond to ICMP requests.
