5.19 Conveyor Belt Maintenance / Adjustment
5.19.1 Belt Tensioning / Alignment
Tension should be measured at the middle of
the return side of the belt along the
centreline. Deflection should not be less than
about 60mm. NOTE: Over-tensioning will
cause bearing failure and belt fatigue. Under-
tensioned belting will cause spillage and head
drum slippage.
The conveyor can sometimes run slightly off
line and in this case it is necessary to adjust
the alignment of the belt. If the conveyor is
running off to the left hand side, either
extend the left hand side of the drum or
retract the right hand side. If the conveyor is
running off to the right hand side either
extend the right hand side of the drum or
retract the left hand side. Only make small
adjustments. Depending on the conveyor,
tensioning and alignment can be carried out
at either head drum or tail drum.
5.19.2 Wing Conveyor
The wing conveyor can be tensioned and
aligned from either the head section or the
tail section.
