1 INFORMATION ON THIS DOCUMENT
1.1 Function
The present instruction manual provides information on installation, connection and
safe use for FD …-EX7,
FL …-EX7, FM …-EX7 series devices.
1.2 To whom it is addressed
The operations in this instruction manual should only be carried out by personnel
qualified in the installation of devices in ATEX environments with explosion hazards,
who are able to fully understand this type of operations and have the appropriate
authorisations.
1.3 Application field
These instructions apply exclusively to the FD …-EX7, FL …-EX7, FM …-EX7
series and to their accessories.

Attention: Any failure to observe this warning note can cause damage or mal-
function, loss of the safety function performed by the device itself, and serious injury
to persons or property.
3 DESCRIPTION
3.1 Device description
The device described in this manual consists of a position switch composed of a
metal housing containing electrical contacts driven by drive heads.
3.2 Intended use of the device
- The device described in this manual is designed to be applied to industrial machines
with or without risk of explosion.
- The direct sale of this device to the public is prohibited.
- The use of the device for purposes other than those specified in this manual is
prohibited.
4 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
4.1 General conditions
- Please read this manual carefully before installation to ensure proper operation of
the device and the safety of the application.
Please contact our Technical Office (see paragraph SUPPORT) for any remaining
issues or questions.
- The general engineering rules, specific national regulations and the applicable
directives must be observed when selecting and using the devices.
- The utilization implies compliance and knowledge of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
For use in potentially explosive areas, the installation rules stipulated by the technical
rules of the area for which the device is designed must be observed.
- Failure to comply with the requirements of the operating manual or incorrect use of
the device during operation can lead to the damage of the device and the loss of the
safety function performed by the device itself.
This will result in termination of the warranty on the item and will release the
manufacturer from any liability.
- Store the products in their original packaging, in a dry place with temperature
between -40°C and +70°C
Attention: Before proceeding with the installation of the device, ensure that the
markings on the product are compatible with the ATEX rating of the site of use.
Failure to comply with this prescription can cause serious injury to persons
including death and/or serious damage to property.

Attention: These devices must be introduced into an intrinsically safe system
containing only components that do not compromise the intrinsic safety level
required by the class of protection. Each device must only be used:
- for a single intrinsic safety system, on switches with contact blocks 20, 21, 22, 28,
29, 30, 33, 34, 66, 67.
- for one or two intrinsic safety systems, on switches with contact blocks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 37.

4.2 Instruments
Normal screwdrivers and tool keys are required for the installation of these devices.
4.3 Electrical parameters
Attention: The electrical parameters are indicated on the product, in this
manual as well as on its certificate, and must be strictly observed:
- Maximum switching voltage 30V dc
- Maximum switching current 2.5A
4.4 Installation
The device can be fastened in any position.
- Always fasten the device with at least two screws of adequate strength and
dimensions for the required stresses. Tighten with torque between 2 and 3 Nm.
- Do not stress the device with bending and torsion.
- Tighten the cover, head and lever screws with a torque between 0.8 Nm and 1.2 Nm.
- Do not exceed the maximum actuation travel.
4.5 Installation requirements
- Do not perform any operation inside the device when there is voltage.
- Maintenance in the ambient temperature range (-20° C to +60° C) and compliance
with the instructions provided with the device are requirements for proper operation.
- During installation and connection, make sure that the conductors are correctly
positioned and clamped in the terminals.
- Tighten the internal conductor terminals with a torque between 0.6 Nm and 0.8 Nm.
- Always use a cable gland suitable for the potentially explosive use environment
and the cable section. Pursuant to EN 60529, the cable gland must have a degree of
protection IP at least equal to or greater than the device.
- To connect the external ground cable, use an eyelet terminal.
- Do not disassemble the device. If it is necessary to adjust the head of the device,
after having done so, reposition the head in the base with greatest care.
- At the end of the wiring, check that no contaminating element has been introduced
inside the device.
- Before closing the device cover verify the correct positioning of the gaskets.
- Verify that the electrical cables, wire-end sleeves, cable numbering systems and any
other parts do not obstruct the cover from closing correctly or if pressed between them
do not damage or compress the internal contact block.
- During and after the installation do not pull the electrical cables connected to the
device. If high traction is applied to the cables (not supported by an appropriate cable
gland) the device contact block may be damaged.
- When the wiring is complete and before activation, verify that the device identification
code corresponds both on the cover and on the housing.
4.6 Testing
No test period is required when installation is performed by qualified personnel.
5 INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROPER USE
5.1 Installation
- Do not modify the device for any reason.
- Do not exceed the tightening torques specified in the present manual.
- If the device performs an operator protection function in accordance with EN ISO
14119, improper installation or tampering can cause serious injury to persons and
even death.
- These devices must not be bypassed, removed, turned or disabled in any other way.
- If the machine where the device is installed is used for a purpose other than that
specified, the device may not provide the operator with efficient protection.
- The safety category of the system according to EN ISO 13849-1, including the safety
device, also depends on the external components connected to it and their type.
- Before installation, make sure the device is not damaged in any part.
- Before installation, ensure that the connection cables are not powered.
- Avoid excessive bending of connection cables in order to prevent any short circuits
or power failures.
- Do not paint or varnish the device.
- Do not drill the device.
- Do not use the device as a support or rest for other structures, such as raceways,
sliding guides or similar.
- Before commissioning, make sure that the entire machine (or system) complies with
all applicable standards and EMC directive requirements.
- The switch fitting surface must always be smooth and clean.
- The documents necessary for a correct installation and maintenance are always
available in the following languages: English, French, German and Italian.
- Should the installer be unable to fully understand the documents, the product must
not be installed and the necessary assistance may be requested (see paragraph
SUPPORT).
- Always attach the following instructions to the manual of the machine in which the
device is installed.
- These operating instructions must be kept available for consultation at any time and
for the whole period of use of the device.
5.2 Do not use in the following environments
- In environments where continual changes in temperature cause the formation of
condensation inside the device.
- In environments where the application causes collisions, impacts or strong vibrations
to the device.
- In environments where ice can form on the device.
- In environments containing strongly aggressive chemicals, where the products used
coming into contact with the device may impair its physical or functional integrity.
- In environments where dust and dirt can cover the device and by sedimenting stop
its correct working.
5.3 Mechanical stop
- The part of the machine that activates the device must always be equipped with an
independent mechanical stop.
- Do not use the device as a mechanical stop for the part of the machine that activates
it.
5.4 Maintenance and functional tests
Attention: Do not disassemble or try to repair the device. In case of any mal-
function or failure, replace the entire device.
Attention: In case of damages or wear it is necessary to change the whole
device. Correct operation cannot be guaranteed when the device is deformed
or damaged.
- The device installer is responsible for establishing the sequence of functional tests
to which the device is to be subjected before the machine is started up and during
maintenance intervals.
- The sequence of the functional tests can vary depending on the machine complexity
and circuit diagram, therefore the functional test sequence detailed below is to be
considered as minimal and not exhaustive.
- Perform the following sequence of checks before the machine is commissioned and
at least once a year (or after a prolonged shutdown):
1) Actuate the device and verify that the machine behaves as expected.
2) Release the device and verify that the machine behaves as expected.
3) Clean the device and avoid the formation of dust layers on the device itself.
4) All external parts must be undamaged.
5) If the device is damaged, replace it completely.
6) The device has been created for applications in dangerous environments, therefore
it has a limited service life. Although still functioning, after 20 years from the date
of manufacture the device must be replaced completely. The date of manufacture is
placed next to the product code (see paragraph MARKINGS).
