8 Conditioning Space Stepper Motors
8.1 Overview
To remove volatile substances from the motors materials, outgassing procedures are per-
formed during the production of the motors. On stator level, a first bake out procedure is
performed and a final outgassing on the completed and tested actuator ensures minimal
outgassing levels.
8.2 Baking out
The stator with assembled coils is placed in vacuum better 10
-6
mbar and baked at 200°C
for 24h. This first outgassing procedure is performed on stator level to make sure volatile
materials do not settle on sensitive parts, such as bearings.
8.3 Final outgassing
The entire actuator is placed in vacuum better 10
-6
mbar after testing and before cleaning
and packaging. During this procedure, it is baked at 130°C for 24h. It is possible to perform
this procedure at higher temperatures up to 200°C, according to customer demands.
