ENGINE MAINTENANCE - 11
BATTERY
WARNING
Battery electrolyte is a corrosive acid and should
be handled with care. If electrolyte is spilled or
splashed on any part of the body, IMMEDIATELY
fl ush the exposed area with liberal amounts of water
and obtain medical aid as soon as possible. Safety
glasses and rubber gloves are recommended when
handling batteries or fi lling with electrolyte.
WARNING
Hydrogen gases that escape from the battery when
charging are highly explosive. Do not use jumper
cables and a booster battery to start the engine. Do
not recharge a weak battery in the boat. Remove
the battery from the boat and recharge in a well
ventilated area away from fuel vapors, sparks and
open fl ames.
Follow maintenance instructions and warnings as
supplied by the battery manufacturer. If this information
is not available, follow these guidelines for the proper
battery care.
•
Do not operate the engine with an open in the
battery circuit, as this may cause damage to the
alternator. Make sure that all connections are
clean and secure.
•
When removing the battery cables, always
remove the negative (-) cable fi rst, and then
remove the positive (+) cable. When installing
battery cables, install the positive (+) cable fi rst,
then install the negative (-) cable.
•
Periodically check the battery for signs of
corrosion, frayed battery leads or cracked case.
Repair or replace as necessary.
•
Periodically check the electrolyte level. Add
distilled water to bring up to the proper levels.
IMPORTANT:
Your engine is designed to work with
the standard electronics installed in your boat. If you
add other electrical components or accessories, you
could change the way the fuel injection controls your
engine or the overall electrical system functions. Before
adding electrical equipment, consult your dealer. If you
don’t, your engine may not perform properly.
CAUTION
Add-on equipment may adversely affect the
alternator output or overload the electrical system.
Any damage caused as a result will not be covered
by, and may void, your warranty.
