Getting Started

Some UI (User Interface) strings remain in English even if the user’s UI is set to another
language. This is because certain strings in some component areas do not work with
MUI yet (i.e. remain in English) due to the complexity of the technologies (The main
areas include: all 16-bit programs, registry keys and values, and strings in INF files.)
This affects about 3% of the User Interface - most of the areas affect administrative
tools. Localized systems have all these strings translated.
If you decide to uninstall a UI language in use by the current user, you must reboot the
computer to ensure the language is completely removed or set the UI language back to
English first and then uninstall the UI language.
When you use MUI OS and localized OS versions together, use English computer names
on localized versions of Windows XP.
When saving an MMC (Microsoft Management Console) file, use Latin characters only.
Using characters outside the system code page will cause the help file not to display.
The following components do not switch User Interface language:
Welcome screen (The screen that appears when logging on to Windows)
MSN Explorer
NetMeeting
Portions of Internet Connection Wizard
HyperTerminal
Narrator
(not all components listed here)

For more information, refer to “c:\windows\mui\relnotes.txt”.

NOTE

Depending on the Windows settings, installed applications, and drivers, menus and
other displays may differ, or some functions (such as use of the password reset disk)
may be inoperable.

You can select Classic view for the Control Panel or select the Classic Start menu.
You can also change the way a user logs on or off.
The procedure in this manual uses the method or view of the Windows XP default
setting (not Classic view or Classic Start menu etc.).

Resetting the password

Windows XP has a function to reset a forgotten password.
To use this function, you need to create a password reset disk beforehand following
the steps below.

1

Connect the USB floppy disk drive (optional: CF-VFDU03) to your computer.

2

Select [start] - [Control Panel] - [User Accounts].

3

Select [Prevent a forgotten password] from [Related Tasks] menu of the account
you used to logon, and create a password reset disk following the on-screen in-
structions.
Store the password reset disk in a safe place.

·

Only the logon password for each account can be reset.
The password set in the Setup Utility cannot be reset.
