Safe operation
1.
Never use a chainsaw if you are tired, ill, agitated or under the influence of
medicine, alcohol or narcotics.
2.
Use safety footwear, tightfitting clothing, safety goggles, ear defenders and a
helmet. Use anti-vibration chainsaw safety gloves.
3.
Keep the chain sharp and the machine in good working order. A blunt chain will
increase cutting time and forcing a blunt chain through wood will increase
vibrations which will be transferred to your hands. A saw with loose components
or damaged or worn antivibration buffers will often have a higher vibrational
level.
4.
Exercise caution at all times when handling fuel. Wipe up any spilled fuel and
ensure that you move at least 3 metres away before starting the engine.
5.
Ensure there are no sparks and flames (e.g. lit cigarettes, open flames or work that
can generate sparks) present in the areas where you will mix, top up or store fuel.
6.
Never smoke while handling fuel or when the chainsaw is in use.
7.
Never allow other persons near the chainsaw when starting the chainsaw or when
using the chainsaw. Keep unauthorised persons away from the working area.
Children, animals and unauthorised persons must be kept at least 10 metres away
when the chainsaw is started or used.
8.
Never start the work before the work area is clear and you have secure footing
and a safe escape route with regard to the falling tree.
9.
Always hold the chainsaw with a firm grip using both hands when using the
chainsaw. Keep a firm grip with thumbs and fingers wrapped around the handles.
10.
Keep body parts away from the saw chain when the engine is running.
