BENCH GRINDER & BELT SANDER SAFETY WARNINGS
WARNING!
When using mains-powered tools, basic safety precautions, including
the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock,
personal injury and material damage.
Read the whole manual carefully and make sure you know how to switch the tool off in an
emergency, before operating the tool.
Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this tool for future reference.
The electric motor has been designed for 230V and 240V only. Always check that the power supply
corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.
Note:
The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for Australia and
New Zealand.
Note:
The power outlet used for the grinder must be protected by a 30mA residual current device or
earth leakage circuit breaker.
The supply cored assessed as type Y attached by using AS/NZS 60335.1.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an electrician or a power tool repairer in order
to avoid a hazard.
Using an Extension Lead
Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool. Before use, inspect
the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the extension lead if damaged
or defective.
When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension
lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk
of fire and electric shock.

Save all
warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings
refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
1. Work area safety
a.
Keep work area clean and well lit
. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b.
Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable
liquids, gases or dust.
Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c.
Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause
you to lose control.
2. Electrical safety
a.
Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.
Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.
Unmodified plugs and
matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b.
Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges
and refrigerators.
There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c.
Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
Water entering a power tool will
increase the risk of electric shock.
d.
Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power
tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.
Damaged or entangled
cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e.
When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f.
If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device
(RCD) protected supply.
Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
3. Personal safety
a.
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power
tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol
or medication.
A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious
personal injury.
b.
Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection.
Protective equipment
such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate
conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c.
Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting
to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
Carrying power tools
with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on.
A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
This enables better control
of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves
away from moving parts.
Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure
these are connected and properly used.
Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
4. Power tool use and care
a.
Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application.
The correct
power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b.
Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off.
Any power tool that
cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c.
Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool
before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
Such
preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d.
Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar
with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool.
Power tools are
dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e.
Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts
and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the
power tool repaired before use.
Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f.
Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.
Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting
edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g.
Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions,
taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.
Use of the
power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5. Service
a.
Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical
replacement parts.
This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
b.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer,
its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.
GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
WARNING!
To avoid mistakes that could cause serious permanent injury, do not plug the
bench grinder/sander in until the following steps are completed:
• Assembly and alignment
• Review and understand all safety instructions and operating procedures in this manual.
• Avoid fire. Clean out all sawdust and disconnect from any vacuum before sanding metals.
• Bolt the bench grinder/sander to a firm level surface where there is plenty of room for handling
and properly supporting the workpiece.
• Never stand on the tool. Serious injury could occur if the tool tips.
• Remove adjusting keys and wrenches from tool before turning it on.
• Make sure all clamps and locks are tight and no parts have excessive play.
• Never use the bench sander near flammable liquids, vapours or gases.
• Make sure there are no nails or foreign objects in the part of the workpiece to be sanded.
• Make sure there are no debris between the workpiece and its supports.
• When sanding irregularly shaped workpieces, plan your workpiece support so it will not slip and
be pulled from your hands.
• Use extra caution with large, very small or awkward workpieces.
• Never use this tool to finish pieces too small to hold by hand.
• Sand only one workpiece at a time.
• Clear everything except the workpiece and related support devices off the table before turning
the bench grinder/sander on.
• Plan the way you will hold the workpiece from start to finish.
• Avoid awkward operations and hand positions where a sudden slip could cause fingers or hand
to move into a sanding surface. Keep fingers away from where the belt goes into the dust trap.
• Always remove the plug from the mains socket before making any adjustments or maintenance,
including changing the wheel or belt.
• Always turn the bench grinder/sander off when it is not in use and never leave it unattended
without first switching off and removing the power plug. Never leave the bench grinder/sander
until the grinding wheels and sanding belt have come to a complete stop.
• Use only grinding wheels which are marked with details of the manufacturer, the type of bonding
agent used, dimensions and the permissible RPM.
• Do not let anyone under 18 years operate this tool.
• Rags, cloths, cord, string and the like should never be left around the work area.
• If you are interrupted when operating the tool, complete the process and switch off before
looking up.
• Periodically check that all nuts, bolts and other fixings are properly tightened.
• Do not use a wheel that has received a blow, especially to the side of the wheel.
• Replace a cracked or suspect wheel.
• Always allow a new wheel to run for a few minutes at full speed before using it. Stand to one
side at start up.
• Check that the wheel rotates freely each time before start up.
• Do not use the bench grinder/sander unless all the guards are properly fitted and secure.
• Check that the workpiece supports are properly adjusted before commencing use.
• Do not overload the bench grinder/sander. Allow the bench grinder/sander to run at full speed, or
close to full speed during use.
• Never apply excessive pressure to the wheel. It might shatter causing personal injury.
• Make sure that the wheel or belt is not in contact with the workpiece when you start the tool.
• When using the bench grinder/sander, use safety equipment including safety goggles or shield,
ear protection, dust mask and protective clothing including safety gloves.
• To prevent damage to the power cable, always lead it away from the rear of the machine.
• Use on materials containing asbestos is prohibited.
• Grinding wheels must be stored in a dry place, ideally at a constant temperature.
• Use only the clamping flanges supplied with the equipment to mount the grinding wheels.
• Never enlarge a grinding wheel‘s mounting hole by subsequent drilling.
• The workpiece supports and the top adjustable safety guards must always be moved as close
as possible to the grinding wheel and belt (max. 2 mm clearance).
• Max. permitted motor housing temperature: 80°C
• Adjust the spark deflector periodically in order to compensate the wear of the wheel. Please note
that the distance between the spark deflector and the wheel is to be kept as small as possible
and should in no case exceed 2mm.
• The grinding wheel must be replaced at the latest when the spark deflector and the workpiece
support can no longer be set a maximum distance of 2mm from the grinding wheel.
• The machine may exceed 85 db (A) at the workplace. The operator will require noise protection
measures and ear muffs if this is the case.
Even if you use this electric power tool in accordance with instructions, certain residual risks cannot be
ruled out. The following hazards may arise in connection with the equipment’s construction and layout:
•
Lung damage if no suitable protective dust mask is used.
•
Damage to hearing if no suitable ear protection is used.
•
Health damage caused by hand-arm vibrations if the equipment is used over a prolonged period
or is not properly guided and maintained.
• Contact with the grinding wheel where it is not covered.
• Catapulting of parts from out of damaged grinding wheels.
• Catapulting of workpieces and parts of workpieces.
