INTRODUCTION
These instructions do not supercede the specific orders of your physician.
Your doctor has determined that wearing a Miami J
®
Advanced collar will
aid in your rehabilitation. The collar will maintain your neck in the proper
position while it is healing. Not being able to turn or shake your head
“yes”
or “no” may seem unusual, but limiting the motion of your neck is an
important part of your treatment. This pamphlet will explain the things you
should do to properly use and care for your Miami J
®
Advanced collar. You
can help the healing process by following your doctor´s instructions and
the guidelines in this pamphlet.
PRECAUTIONS
• You must be lying flat to remove the collar unless your doctor gives
you permission to do this in a sitting position.
• You will need a second person to help you when cleaning the collar.
• Unless otherwise specified by your doctor:
Do not change the height
adjustment. Do not remove the collar except to wash under it and
change the pads.
• Collar removal should be done with physician permission only .
Not made with natural rubber latex
SKIN CARE
Keeping your collar and the skin beneath it clean is an important part of
your treatment. Daily cleaning will help to prevent skin irritation.
A second person must assist during this procedure.
1. Before removing the collar, mark both sides where the straps overlap
the front of the collar (Figure 1)
.
2. Lie flat on your back on a bed without a pillow, arms to the side,
shoulders down and head aligned centrally (Figure 2)
.
3. Keep your head and neck in a neutral position at all times. Do not
bend your neck forward, backward, or from side to side.
4. Detach the strap on one side of the collar and carefully slide the collar
out from under neck (Figure 3)
.
5. Wash the front and back of neck with mild facial soap and water and
completely dry the skin. Observe for any redness or irritation under
the collar, especially over bony areas like the chin, clavicles, or back of
the head. Contact your physician if irritation is present.
6. Clean the collar as described in the Collar Cleaning instructions below.
7. Replace the collar by sliding the back carefully behind the neck
making sure it is centered behind the head. Long hair should be
placed outside the collar.
8. Slide the front up under the chin, aligning the front edge of the
collar’s chin support with the front of the chin (Figure 4)
.
9. While holding the front securely, curl the loose side snugly against the
neck and securely apply the strap to the front. The end of the strap
should be placed according to the mark on the collar made prior to
removal
