TROUBLESHOOTING
D.1
DETECTIVE X APPLICATION STOPS
The Detective X incorporates a computer running the Windows mobile operating system. Occasionally, the
operating system will stop responding to external commands. Press and hold the power button until the
computer shuts down and restarts; this may take 10–20 seconds (the mechanical cooler will continue
running). This will reset the operating system and automatically relaunch the Launcher application (or the
default application declared in Launcher, if applicable).
D.2
DETECTIVE X WAS DROPPED
Although it is a precision scientific instrument, the Detective X has been designed for field use in the most
challenging conditions and should survive reasonable levels of mechanical abuse. It has been drop-tested to
destruction in development and is known to have a high degree of survivability to “normal” shock and
vibration.
If the instrument is dropped:
Inspect the exterior for evidence of mechanical damage or distortion.
Listen to the cooler: If any unusual noises are heard (rattling or pinging) from the cooler, contact an
ORTEC representative or ORTEC’s Global Service Center.
Cycle the unit’s power as follows: Disconnect from any external power source, disconnect any USB
connection, and press and hold the On/Off button. Acknowledge the shutdown message. Wait 5
seconds, then turn the unit back on. This should reset any mechanical relays that may have been
deactivated by the drop.
If the mechanical relays do not reset, it may be necessary to remove battery power as well. Repeat
the shutdown procedure. Once the instrument has turned off, open the battery compartments and
remove both batteries (see Section 2.4.1). Wait 5 seconds, then reassemble the unit and turn the
instrument back on.
Monitor the unit for the next few hours to ensure that the display reads
Status: READY
(indicating
that the cooler, bias voltage, and gain stabilizer are functioning properly). If gain stabilizer errors are
indicated, perform a calibration as described in Section 4.15.
If the unit fails in one or more of these respects, or if one or more hardware diagnostic settings indicate a
hardware failure, contact an ORTEC representative or ORTEC’s Global Service Center for assistance.
Remember that there are no user-serviceable parts inside the Detective X and opening the case will void the
warranty.
D.3
SUDDEN COOLER FAILURE
If the Detective X receives a vibration error, the cooler will automatically shut down. A vibration error could
be caused by bumping or jarring the detector or inserting a collimator with too much force. With a vibration
error, the cooler will turn off but the Detective X or Sleuth software packages will continue to think the cooler
is operational. When the cooler error occurs, the instrument will go silent and the typical fan noises of the
