ORBAN MODEL
[In] or [Out]
When set to In, the 8600S adds “high-pass” dither before any truncation
of the output word. The amount of dither automatically tracks the set-
ting of the
W
ORD
L
ENGTH
control. This is first-order noise shaped dither
that considerably reduces added noise in the midrange by comparison to
white PDF dither. However, unlike extreme noise shaping, it adds a max-
imum of 3 dB of excess total noise power when compared to white PDF
dither. Thus, it is a good compromise between white PDF dither and ex-
treme noise shaping.
If the source material has already been correctly dithered (as is true for
virtually all commercially recorded material), you may set this control to
OUT
. However, particularly if you use the Noise Reduction feature, the
processing can sometimes attenuate input dither so that it is insufficient
to dither the output correctly. In this case, you should add dither within
the 8600S.

to AES or SPDIF.
SPDIF is the standard consumer format;
AES
is almost always correct in
professional facilities.

If you will not be using the
Ratings Encoder Loop-through feature, repeat steps (B) through (I) for DO2. If
you are using the Ratings Encoder Loop-through feature, follow the proce-
dure in step (K) below.

You cannot use DO1 for this purpose. This is the essential difference be-
tween DO1 and DO2.
b)
Connect your Optimod’s
DO2
output to the AES3 input of the ratings
encoder.
c)
Connect the ratings encoder’s AES3 output to your Optimod’s AES3id Input
.
Depending on whether you choose AGC
>R
ATINGS
or
L
IMIT
>R
ATINGS
, the
AES3id input is repurposed automatically to drive the input of the FM/HD
split point or your Optimod’s stereo encoder.
AGC
applies a controlled
audio level to the encoder and allows you to use one ratings encoder for
both FM and HD;
L
IMIT
applies the highest possible audio level to the rat-
ings encoder but requires two ratings encoders if you are transmitting
HD.
d)
Set the

In Ratings Encoder Loop-through mode, you cannot use your Optimod’s
AES3id Input
to receive a sync reference signal. You can still lock your Op-
timod’s output sample rate to a signal applied to its AES3 input.
