6.5 Balancing the model
6.5.1
Balancing the propellor:
Let the propellor spin lightly on its own and note how comes to a rest. Add a drop of glue behind the tip of
the propellor blade that is the hightest. Once dry try again until the propellor comes to rest in a different po-
sition each time it spins
6.5.2 Place the wings on the Pylons and hold them in position with a diagonally stretched rubber band.
Suspend the model by the thread from the wings, to check the centre of gravity.
6.5.3
Balancing:
From the side view the fuselage must lie horizontal.
Add small amounts of lead (band) to the front or rear until it balances the glue them in position.
6.5.4
Side balance:
Hold the model and look at it from the front, again it should lie horizontally.
Add small pieces of lead to either of the wing tips until the model balances correctly.
The model is ready for flying now.
6.6 Flying:
6.6.1
Gliding:
The Dragonfly is a light rubber powered model and is deisigned for flying on calm days with light winds.
Always fly into the wind.
Of course you have balanced the model before attempting to fly it.
The Dragonfly should fly in a large right hand curve.
If the model flies in a stalling pattern the trailing edge of the wing must be raised a small amount mm wise.
Cut a srtrip of card 5 mm wide x 30 long and fix under the trailing edge of the wing (eventually glue in positi-
on)
Note:
Use a solvent free glue!
• If the model dives, raise the leading edge of the wings with strips of card (see above).
If the model flies in too tight a curve alter the angle of the tail fin.
If the model flies lightly in a curve and tips sideways the tail fin can be altered by means of a tab (see plan on
page 21) set the tail tab.
/flap to alter the flight pattern On no account should the model fly in a left hand curve otherwise it will crash
due to the turning effect of the motor.
