The lens or autofocus window was dirty.

A finger, etc., was in front of the autofocus window.
Hold the camera correctly, keeping the fingers, etc.,
away from the autofocus window. (p. 17)
The subject was closer than the minimum focusing
distance of 0.6m (2ft).
Position the subject 0.6m (2ft) or more away from the
camera and take the picture. (p. 22)
