Further explanations for the wheel suspension test
For rear wheels with light-weight vehicles with an engine installed
at the front (low axle load at the rear, e.g. Panda, Corsa, Twingo
etc.) low wheel grip values of 20% - 40% are normal, whithout that
the travelling gear needs to be faulty. In these cases, the diffe-
rence suffices as criterion if the front axle is within the limit values
(if necessary or for inspection purposes, have two people sit
down on the backseat). The same also applies to the rear axle of
trucksters without useful load.
When judging the measuring values and the question
whether the shock absorbers are to be exchanged, the
manufacturing tolerances of the shock absorber ma-
nufacturers must under all cirumstances be observed.
These are specified between 10% and 20%. In
practice, this means that, in exceptional cases, the
measuring values may be worse than before if new,
exchanged shock absorbers are used.
The results of the measuring platforms of the wheel
suspension tester do not replace the experience of the
workshop staff. Especially the conditions of the vehicle
must be observed. If the displayed values are too small,
the shock absorber does not necessarily need to be
defective. Loose or too tight fixings, installation errors
or adjusted wheel geometry (blocked suspension joint,
bent linkage) lead to low wheel grip results. A concrete
judgement of the wheel suspension can only be made
after a visusal inspection has been executed.
Manual mode
After actuating the key „Handbetrieb“ (66) at the IR remote
control (option), the test stand is in the „manual mode“.
On principle, the measuring sequence (prepare vehicle/wheel
suspension test front axle/wheel suspension test rear axle) is
identical with the „automatic mode“.
In the manual mode, the engines can only be started manually by
pressing a key:
By pressing the key combination „Sicherheitstaste“ (59) and
„Rollensatz links“(50) at the IR remote control (option), the
measurement of the wheel grip of the left-hand wheel can be
started.
By pressing the key combination „Sicherheitstaste“ (59) and
„Rollensatz links“(51) at the IR remote control (option), the
measurement of the wheel grip of the right-hand wheel can be
started.
If the wheel suspension tester is not used for measuring
passenger cars, the cover plates
must
be put on as a
crossing protection for heavier vehicles to the measu-
ring platforms!

Wheel running test
a)
Front axle measurement
Drive slowly (at a walking speed), uniformly and in the center
above the wheel running tester. Do not steer. The front compen-
sation plate starts the measurement and changes over to the
wheel running display. The front compensation plate illuminates
undesired lateral forces (distortion) in the tire. The run-out is
measured by the next plate.
During the measurement, the following text appears on the
required 14-figure digital display (option): „Spur A1: .....“. The
detected axle which is to be measured now is designated as „A1“.
Result of measurement: The measuring value of the measured
axis is represented as numerical value in m/km and stored for the
log print-out. Example for digital display indication: „Spur A1: -
3.2“
Positive value: Wheels stand to the inside, outward wheel shift
during driving.
Negative value: Wheels stand to the outside, wheel shift to the
inside during driving.
b)
Measuring further vehicle axles
Drive slowly (at a walking speed), uniformly and in the center
above the wheel running tester. Do not steer during the measu-
rement of steered axles. The front compensation plate starts the
measurement and changes over to the wheel running display. The
front compensation plate illuminates undesired lateral forces
(distortion) in the tire. The run-out is measured by the next plate.
During the measurement, the following text appears on the
required 14-figure digital display (option): „Spur Ax: .....“. The
detected axle which is to be measured now is designated as „Ax“.
„x“ designates the axle number beginning with „1“ for the front
axle.
Result of measurement: The measuring value of the measured
axis is represented as numerical value in m/km and stored for the
log print-out. Example for digital display indication: „Spur A2:
+6.2“
Positive value: Wheels stand to the inside, outward wheel shift
during driving.
Negative value: Wheels stand to the outside, wheel shift to the
inside during driving.
After deleting the measuring values of the previous vehicle by the
„C“ key on the remote control, the axle number count starts with
1 again.
Each time driving over the front compensation plate increases the
current axle number by 1.
