Appendix B
You can implement 100Base-TX technology gradually, as its high
speed and additional bandwidth become necessar y in your net-
work environment. The steps below outline the migration path
from 10Base-T to 100Base-TX.
1.
Begin wiring your network with Categor y 5 cable, with two
pairs available for data, so that you can use both 10Base-T
and 100Base-TX adapters.
2.
As you add new computers and other devices to your network,
install dual-speed 10/100 adapters to prepare for migration,
so that your devices can suppor t both Ethernet and Fast
Ethernet. And as your LAN traffic increases, install
100Base-TX hubs. Connect the 10/100-equipped devices to
the new 100Base-TX hubs. (Fast Ethernet hubs, bridges, and
switches are available from Farallon.)
3.
Connect your 100Base-TX network to your 10Mbps LAN with
10/100 bridge or switching products.
4.
Finally, connect bridges and hubs with a backbone.
